I will admit a small part of me would have liked to see how the old 1.0 game played with the new PC i have now, would have liked to especially experienced the CSs, i've seen most of them on youtube.I got my new pc 2 month before the final death throws of 1.0
While it still felt clunky as hell, it was awesome. The CS where Nael fires his Gunblade Lance at you still is very vivid in my memory. The preceding "Ifrit Bleeds" battle was, in my memory, way more crazy than Ifrit Bleeds + HM in ARR.
Never was able to see garuda, but it took the people of my server quite long till the first clear. And I got told, she was way harder than Garuda HM and EX.
Some things are better left dead. But just look at Hildibrandt, dead became him well!
And Hildibrandt...that guys immortal, he will never truly die.

When I first got the game, this is what it looked like at the settings I was able to play it at. Even with this there was lag.
(Note: this is not actually my screenshot, but it is exactly what the game used to look like.)
Around 1.18 I got a new computer, so I started playing again then, but even then it was a budget machine so at best I was using the standard setting. The frustrating thing about 1.x was that the standard setting was pretty much what should have been low, since anything less than standard was a significant downgrade in quality. Especially pixelation of not only the environment, but the nameplates. I mean why even release a game with a supported graphics setting that results in the text being illegible and most environmental features indistinguishable? Even FFXI looked better at minimum settings than that did.
And that's not even talking about the slow as molasses UI. Opening up a merchant's store interface or your retainer could easily take up to 30 seconds, especially if you were in the Ul'dah which was the hub equivalent of today's Revenant's Toll. Probably the biggest derp I've ever encountered in a public release of a game.
Omg how could i forget the slow UI, it was frustrating to see that such a beautiful looking game could be in the state it was in, i don't quite remember at what settings i played at during the beta but i do know my screenies from that time don't look anything like the pic you posted so i must have been playing at a higher setting than standard, i refused to play it at a lower setting because really the game was just too beautiful to look at in a lower res, here's a few screenie of two of my old toons during the beta.*Snip* And that's not even talking about the slow as molasses UI. Opening up a merchant's store interface or your retainer could easily take up to 30 seconds, especially if you were in the Ul'dah which was the hub equivalent of today's Revenant's Toll. Probably the biggest derp I've ever encountered in a public release of a game.
Found this npc dialogue just too funny
Sizing up this coblyn

In dream world, I would love for there to be a 1.xx server with its serious flaws taken care of so I can experience it for myself. With the way veterans have spoken about it, that version sounds like the game I should be playing.
Yeah, it would be cool. That way, we could do Ifrit, Garuda, and DD/Vale runs all day until we have full DL gear!

They actually were going to keep the servers up depending on how many people logged on to say they wanted to keep it. Due to the data, was not enough people who wanted it.
~This. I actually logged in pretty much every day the 1.0 servers were back on for that month and a bit at the end of 2012, and I only ever saw like two or three other people on my server - in fact one time I did a search and I was literally the only one logged into Ridill.
Most 1.0 players didn't bother logging back in because nothing they did was going to carry through to ARR, hence they felt there was no point in having the servers back, especially those players who had already done everything available in 1.0.
I admit I'd love to see the 1.0 servers brought back though, but more for sentimental value (and no, I'm not one of the '1.0 is better than ARR' brigade) - I'd just like to play it again for old time's sake.
They actually did keep them up, because the survey met Yoshi's minimum response for that. Iirc the final save was at the end of September or beginning of October, which is when they would have shut down, but they kept the servers live due to the responses on the survey. They were then shut down in November because not enough people were actually playing. I.e. the player base didn't put their money where their mouths were.
