FFVI is my favorite. The story was good and it has the most successful FF antagonist (and is the most evil, plus he's a madman). The game is just great.

And 2 non-main series FF favorites of mine that deserve a mention: Final Fantasy Tactics (War of the Lions) and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.

The writer takes a critical in-depth look into VIII and you may look at the game differently after reading it
    It's essentially a character study
Thank you for posting that. Made my lunch break much better.

I have liked almost all of them for their good story and characters. For actual game content FF10 was supreme. Best summoning system ever created, and it has only been downhill since.

Haven't played 12 or 13 because they look boring, but I'm sure I'd love the stories and characters if I ever did give them a try.

IDK, 12 had really poor character developement IMO. Gameplay is awesome, somewhat similiar to 14, but I couldn't get over the bland characters and poor sound quality of the voice overs.

I got to say my favorite story was X. Had everything I could ever want except the bad voice acting not matching the mouths of the character. Other then that. I love this game.
    My second favorite is XII
Since I love Balthier the sky pirate.

Problem I find with 12 is that it's incredibly subtle with a misleading main character.
Vaan is plastered all over the cover and promo materials yet the story isn't focused on him
Ashe and Vayne, Balthier and Cid, Gabranth and Basch are the real leads in that game. Everyone else becomes irrelevant

It's not like the others where everyone felt like they had a place in the story and the group
Penelo and Vaan literally could have stayed home and they wouldn't be missed. Fran was merely a plot device, nothing more

FFV was my first (a translated SNES rom) and I loved it. It's probably due to being my first FF that I liked it so much. It was also the one that introduced the job system we use in XI and XIV.

FF7 was the first I had ever seen but I think 12, 10 and FF7: dirge of Cerberus are my favorites. 13-2 would probably be in my top five. It is hard to me there has never been a bad FF game except a couple of mobile ones.

Yeah I agree. It's a shame they just didn't make Balthier the main character and completely replace Penelo and Vaan, or at least make them a little more interesting by playing on the fact that there was was obviously some sort of spark between the two.

Even with that in mind, they could have done a lot better on humanizing the characters. IDK, maybe it's just me, but I never truly cared or empathized for any of them when I was playing the game like I did for Zidane, Garnet, Terra, Tidus, Yuna, etc etc.

I feel like I'm in the minority as my favorite Final Fantasy game is FFV. It was well-written, it didn't take itself too seriously, and a ton of the characters were memorable. It also expanded on the idea that every Final Fantasy game takes place in another universe connected by the Interdimensional Rift, which laid the foundation for the appearance of certain Final Fantasy characters (Gilgamesh, Shinryu, Omega, Ultros, Typhon, Pupu, and others) in other games within the franchise, and was also the explanation for how the Dissidia games existed.

I'm a really big fan of FFV and I hope to see a lot more of FFV in FFXIV, especially Shinryu, Omega, and the possibility of an Interdimensional Rift dungeon/raid with a final showdown against the necromancer Enuo.
