If they do add an underwater zone, it would probably be like how they did it in some previous FFs (VII comes to mind with Underwater materia). A regular zone with regular movement on the sea bed (or a sunken temple or something) with some kind of underwater breathing item/key item/gear.

Having only read the OP, all I'll say is....

I wouldn't mind a Sea like zone from XI simply because of the graphics :x

WoW's version in Cata was fairly decent. When you touched the ground in the underwater zone you'd walk normally but jump and you're swimming again. Not only that but after a few quests you get perma-unending breath so there's no fear of drowning.

And yet ARR regressed in order to meet the standard. What's funny is, XI made strides in not only MMO, but the series since it's the first you can play and level as a monster for example. A game or two in the past had you control slightly (Pictomancer for example) but it's actually trying different things.

What is new that ARR has tried as of launch? Multiple classes per character isn't even unique anymore as Eden Eternal before it also does it. Though it's "not a good excuse" it didn't keep WoW from utilizing things in it's Warcraft series.

People seemed perfectly happy with that.
