Kind of a bummer that it didn't happen, would be cool to run around with the brotherhood sword or Lulu's moogle or cactuar doll.

IMO the only reason XIII was a event in XIV cause XIII not strong enough to sell itself.
SE could do a laughing contest
As reward we could get /laugh2
Another reason why I doubt that they do a FF X cross-over event is because the other game need then something from FF XIV, too.
Lightning Return get a Miqo'te costume, FF XI a Spriggan costume and DQ X a cactuar mask.
If SE don't have put in a function for dlc in the FF X remake or put in something from FF XIV during the production, then it would not really be a cross-over event.

I <3 this idea!
As others have stated, Jap release has come and gone already so chances of us seeing anything is nill. =/
They should have done something though damn it! FFX is (imho and many others I would dare say) WAY more popular with the FF fan base than the XIII fiasco. Speaking of XIII, they DID fan service for that release as others (Myahele think posted it first) pointed out. So SE has shown its intention for such tie-ins and there are numerous other instances already in-game of various FF game nods.
WUB WUB
FFXI- Seraph
I wouldn't get confused here, its obvious that they are also trying to make free advertising on their own game for Lightning Return which come out in 4 - 5 days lol.
A missed opportunity for cross promotion. Isn't ffx 10th anniversary or something?
Maybe cameos aren't needed but at least have events that allows us some vanity gear or minions. Have a quest that requires us to go on a pilgrimage and pray.
These events are optional and quite fun. I'm pretty sure many SE games will show up to a lesser extent. Especially when it comes to vanity. I know lighting will have laura Crofts clothes
If I could have a blitz ball water ball fountain in the front yard of my house I'd go ballistic!
I'd also be really cool with a Yojimbo fate for vanity.
There are valid points on both sides of this argument. It's true that the game shouldn't rely on the appearances of other FF titles' characters appearing, but I think a short-term promotional event to go along with the NA release of Final Fantasy X HD on March 18th (watch, patch 2.2 will be within a week of that date) would be just fine.
I do agree with the sentiment that XIII does need the promotional assistance, where-as X HD will sell itself.
Let us not forget though: Final Fantasy Tactics had Aerith in her classic role as 'the flower girl' and Cloud's appearance as a special recruitable character. Final Fantasy Tactics is definitely strong enough of its own accord, without reliance on their appearance, yet included them anyways.
How about a FATE fighting a Dark Aeon? One of the special perks of the International version that we NAs will FINALLY be getting.
That's just my two gil on the matter.

The only thing I would add is that ARR is in no way reliant on the appearances of other characters from other games in order to progress. I know you didn't say that, I just wanted to point that out to those who are misunderstanding this concept. It's just filler, and good filler at that. It's a smart business decision.
Honestly, I do not mind these fan service events. We get cool outfits, hair styles, minions, weapons, etc. from them and they give you something to do out of the norm. Why not? Cloud has made an appearance in a bunch of games that aren't FFVII. He and the rest of the cast of the Dissidia games and other Square-Enix titles are more than welcome to visit Eorzea.
