I've noticed that every guildleve or quest for any of the DoL jobs basically comes down to doing the exact same thing. Quests have a bit of dialogue and emote and parley, but the guildleves are always one of two things:One of the main offenders is the "Gather at X number of places" guildleve. It has many names but it's always the same. The backstory is "The guild is looking for new resource nodes and you are to investigate until you find 3 that are good." The leve always tells you which nodes you can gather at and it directs you to them in order. Just follow the minimap and you win, every time.
- Gather until you get X items.
- Gather at X number of places.
Here's my suggestion for an alternative: same backstory, but instead of just mindlessly gathering you have to report back the location of the "valuable" nodes. The guild sends you out and you have 30 minutes to find a minimum of 3 good nodes; good being defined as either being bountiful or having better-quality resources. You complete the leve by contacting an overseer NPC (via linkpearl?), who then pulls up a map which has been marked with each of the nodes you've mined at. You click on the good ones and mark them as either bountiful or high-quality and you're done; your reward is based on not only completing the level in the time limit but on accurately reporting the results.
As new areas open up, the guildleves can be called "Survey: <area>" and your task is to map out as many nodes as possible in 30 minutes, marking your map with notes on quantity and quality, with reward based on number of nodes and accuracy of your reports.
And to follow those, a type of guildleve called "Investigation: <area>" where you return to those areas and are asked to gather as much information as you can about specific nodes. For instance, you're asked to investigate 3 nodes that have gold ore. To succeed, you need to experiment with depth and find the optimal point for getting gold at each node and report that back to the guild.
Not only would more variety in guildleves take away the monotony of gathering, but some like the Investigation suggestion would help gatherers understand the value of fiddling with the settings when they approach a new node.
