Olympic games event- why not?

@Im a troll@, Russia haters or Olympic games haters.. I dont care. Im from Russia- so what (here we will see a joke about my not good english)? This is not a political thread- this thread is just an IDEA. I played in a small anime mmorpg and there was an event during 2012 Olympic games, special sport costumes in the in-game store. It was nice. Is it so popular to try to find different points of the words? There is ONE point- idea of an in-game event, idea for the developers to make different, unusual events. Just read the words- dont try to see something between the word lines

And you can just chalk me up to a Russian-law hater. I'm sure there are plenty of awesome, pro-equal rights russians out there.

You also can't hope to create a thread about this with the current climate in Russia and not expect someone to bring up the reason why the olympics are being overshadowed by political issues this year

Not for players to discuss? No, this thread is just an attempt to get people heated over nothing. We have discussed how awesome it would be, but what lengths SE would have to go through to get this labeled as an Olympic event. Wow you are dense. You bring shame to us Lala.

You're wasting your time feeding a troll I'm afraid. In his mind there is no other alternative in regard to his "issues", he's just baiting you at this point. As for myself, I enjoyed watching the opening ceremonies, and hope they go well. For the record, I'm well aware of the controversies surrounding Sochi, and I'm not saying that the issues have no merit, but it seems petty to use an event that champions the spirit of fair competition as political leverage.

Well, for one thing, it would be for the Olympic committee to approve, and that organization is very strict. For example, businesses around the venues (like in London last time) are forbidden by law from using words like "gold" or "summer" in their advertising, athletes are forbidden from mentioning any brand even in their tweets, etc. (#rule40)

I see, but what about in-game itself. In what jurisdiction the in-game space is? Japanese, Canadian? And how any law can forbid to use any word such as GOLD or SUMMER? Yes, there is the world Olympic Organization, but this organization can not make rules or laws on the territory of different independent countries and can not forbid to use something, connected with Olympic games

The Olympics is a protected brand/trademark, just like Iron Man or Coca Cola. SE would need to license it before they could put it in the game. Even if SE just made a "5 rings" symbol of the Eorzean cities they could face a lawsuit. The jurisdiction would probably be Japan, because "in-game" is a product created by a Japanese company in Japan.

As for "how can a law forbid...?", that's what my links were for, to show it has already been done. Also, Tokyo will host the Olympic summer games in 2020. They would be directly under these very strict rules set by the Olympics and enforced by Japan/Tokyo.

Edit: OP: It's an interesting idea, but it might be a whole game patch worth of work and be a huge distraction from the regular game. Also, I hope all goes well for the Olympics in Sochi.

Licensing issues aside, my issue with an Olympics type event is about who competes and who the teams are.
The teams would have to be the Grand Companies.
If the players are competing, then I think we need mini-game like events .. so maybe after Gold Saucer is added. Also the games would only be available to players registered with a GC.
If the players aren't competing and just facilitating organizing the games and we get cut scenes with the GCs competing .. that could work but seems less fun.

i like the winter olympics even over the summer, and im not even into watching sports. considering i dont like any of the in game events, this would be one exception, so i feel with the op /disappointed.
