Why don't we have character clone service?

Cloning just... seems ripe for abuse to be honest, there are other methods, but I doubt they'd work either.

Things like World of Warcraft having "Cross Realm Zones" that allowed you to play on other servers with friends via group invites through the battletag / Real ID system. Problem was like most things they released it was half assed and full of bugs which plagued the game for a long time, some of the bugs I believe are still there. Also allowed PVP players to invade PVE/RP servers. Granted we wouldn't have that kind of problem, but it would be a lot of work, make crowded zones even more crowded, and probably bring more bugs than fixes.

Sometimes I wonder if people think their ideas thoroughly out before suggesting them... Or just wake up one day and go "I had a dream! That people could clone their characters!"...

This can be abused in so many ways. Either you all play on the same server or you make an alt. There is no other good option here.

why don't we have such service?

Probably the same reason all the other MMOs I play which are 'world-centric' don't have one either. GW1 has the ability to 'roam' across servers, but that isn't duplicating the way you're asking for.

stop wondering. most people just wake up and go "I had a dream! ..." most of them don't even need to wake up and can do it in the middle of any conversation. that's why I always say that any sentence that starts with "I think..." or "I believe..." will be (almost) always followed by some kind of moronic garbage.

truth to be told there are a number of ways to prevent most (if not all) the abuses.

for example limiting how many clones you can make in X amount of time, limiting you to make clones to other servers, making it a paid service (more expensive than just moving a character), cloning only the equipped items instead of all the inventory and making them unsellable (is that a word?) on the new server, only allowing a single simultaneous clone on each server, ...

that being said I agree that the economical benefit for square wouldn't be worth the time expended into coding it and finding ways to avoid all the possible abuses.
