The best solution is for SE to toughen up and ban players who bot. They have only mostly been banning obvious RMT with hack tools, but not players who just bot with a repeating script. The last time they did this they got a firestorm from this forum of players claiming they were banned for some retarded made-up reasons like having too much gil.

Once they decisively ban all the player bots, RMT bots and gil buyers, they can reduce the drop ratw again.
Those repeating scripts are performed client side locally to the machine and don't interface at all with Program Files x86 > SquareEnix. Because of this, Square can't monitor that behavior and/or program without having a VPN/FTP (with full admin R/W rights) directly to everyone's machine. Never mind the MASSIVE invasion of privacy that would cause and ask yourself; Is Square competent enough to actually pull something like that off (hi NSA) and not wreck computers in the process (Hell, I could fake logs that would show that Square's software ruined my BIOS. Guess who would have to reimburse me for a new machine?)

Break the script by trying to trade the offending party.
