Ill play.Im to lazy to do the math so im just going to go by the number stated in the comments.I wouldnt consider 45m a great success.Im sure Blizzard makes that much in a weekend and even swtor made 180m just from the cash shop

Should FFXIV shut down tomorrow because it's not making as much money as WoW? Does that mean no other game should exist because it's not "as successful" as WoW? All I care about is, Cost, Revenue, Profit.
FFXIV is making so much profit that it's effecting the ENTIRE company, not just recouping it's own cost of production. This is amazing news for FFXIV. This means we can expect quality content and resources to be poured into FFXIV. This is great news for those of us who love FFXIV.

As mentioned, FFXI was anything but 'low sales', it bankrolled the company for quite some time.
Can't stress this enough. If ARR hadn't been profitable at launch I suspect the bean counters back at SE HQ would have called in time on the 3 month content patch cycle rather swiftly or cut back on the staffing at the very least. As is with it turning over more money than expected and with several nice little cash cows yet to be offered up to the plate (PS4 release, ARR Soundtrack, Mog station Fantasia etc), it's fantastic news for us as I suspect YoshiP will have little trouble getting all the resources and manpower he needs for the content team.FFXIV is making so much profit that it's effecting the ENTIRE company, not just recouping it's own cost of production. and have it on lock outs so they can milk more money...
Sorry to pop the bubble, but with 6month prepays, and all the mechanisms in the game specifically designed so that you can only accomplish 'x' amount of advancement per week, should not be praised because their tactics are working... Lets think about it for a second, if SE was so confident that they could maintain a player base with monthly subs only and let us progress at the rate we want, we would not have all the restrictions.
Also keep in mind, that as the game hits the 6 month mark, all those who were optimistic, prepaid 6 months and then canceled are about to roll off the books.
SE should celebrate after 1 year and see how many customers kept their sub for more then 1 or 2prepay cycles... without time scaled retention rates, all of this prepay gives false impressions to those who do not work in business...
well, you must know that FFXI is also making profit for SE...
the question here is really that how successful they want to become.
apparently SE's high management is too conservative in this aspect therefore it's hard for the game to gain momentum.

In this case, it's important to know what Square-Enix defines as success though. Unit's sold? Number of Subscribers? Number of Happy Customers? It could be a combination of many things. Typically if you focus on making your customers happy you should have a high number of subscribers and sell a lot of units, ect.
Looking at video games as a form of entertainment I think the best way to define success is by asking, "Have I made a fun game?"

Well since the majority of their players are from a Chinese demogrpahic that pay less than nothing in sub fees. And American players are too casual to care about vanity items.....I highly doubt Blizzard is bring in any more money over regular MMOs at this point.

I know a lot of people have certain issues with FFXIV, but don't all games have "issues" or things you may not like. However, havn't you guys noticed that this game is just jam packed with players? Every single place I go, no matter what the zone, high or low level, there are players playing.
