Be positive!
well, you must know that FFXI is also making profit for SE...
the question here is really that how successful they want to become.
apparently SE's high management is too conservative in this aspect therefore it's hard for the game to gain momentum.

In this case, it's important to know what Square-Enix defines as success though. Unit's sold? Number of Subscribers? Number of Happy Customers? It could be a combination of many things. Typically if you focus on making your customers happy you should have a high number of subscribers and sell a lot of units, ect.
Looking at video games as a form of entertainment I think the best way to define success is by asking, "Have I made a fun game?"

. . . Pretty sure when the Weapons appeared I then spent 30 hours chocobo-breeding so I could get my Black Chocobo so I could get Knights of the Round. And then another 15 hours in the Battle Square getting Omnislash.

It didn't have to, it made a revolutionary step in the MMO genre.
- Cross-platform
- First Auction House System
- in-game cutscenes
- Global servers, multiple languages /w a auto-translate function.
It also heavily influenced XII.

FFXI didn't actually 'influence FFXII', as it didn't have to - FFXII was originally conceived to be exactly like FFXI - as in, a MMORPG. It was first announced back at the Squaresoft Millennium Event in 1999, when it was stated that from FFXI and onwards, the series would be practically online only. Of course after Sakaguichi left those plans were pretty much dumped, but hints of the online plans for FFX and XII can still be seen, such as the PlayOnline branding on FFX's title screen, and the GUI and many other elements of FFXII being very much like a MMO. But I digress.
I don't normally do this but uh.... It seems like my prediction about this game was true.
