Sounds a lot like a warlock from WOW.Summoner like the Blackmage is a caster DPS role that relies on pet input. Your DPS mainly comes in from DoTs and ensuring that they are all up. For single player content I believe that it is one of the best out there as you are loaded with your own healing spell, MP regeneration (BLM has to balance Astral Fire/ Umbral Ice procs for their MP regen, and ours is just one button) and tank pet. The only thing we don't really have to start off with is a good AOE and burst DPS.
Plus when you are able to do the job quests you get to have primal's floating around and nor just carbuncles. Arcanist is also currently the only class that can have two jobs.
But I am a bit biased as SMN is my main. It's up to you on how you wish to play and what cracks that cheeky grin on your face when you down content.
For a fairly new player I would recommend Archer/Bard. I don't have much personal experience but they seem easiest to play as, being able to move and still do damage, and also as a ranged you will have a good view to observe what exactly is going on as you progress in difficulty, and if you decide to do some other role later on you will have that experience to fall back on.
That being said, there is significant emphasis on cross class skills as you approach end game. Bard uses cross class skills from Pugilist and Lancer, so you can really level a few classes to 15 or so and see how you like it, those skills will come in handy later on.

You will probably want to avoid DRG and MNK due to their potential being greatest when they are not in front of a monster. The positioning can be a bit of a nuisance if you do not have a tank with you to keep the monster occupied. You might still consider a tank, even if you don't intend to do dungeons with it, due to their durability which can come in very handy during FATE events (which you will probably be doing a lot of) when you are alone. Warrior has a good mix of damage, durability, and self-healing which makes it a nice melee choice for solo work. Thanks for the information.
My situation is that I have a 7 month old daughter. She doesn't tend to sleep like ever. TBH I wouldn't be playing any MMO's if she slept reliably, because I would be playing League of Legends. But It's simply just not an option for me at this time. So I decided to try some MMO's since I can generally play for 5 minutes at a time, and drop whatever I was doing, and handle real life things.
So basically due to my situation I ruled out tanking because in my experience people get pissed when I either have to AFK for extended periods, or drop group because my daughter woke up(I only play while she sleeps). So I tend to prefer to solo content as much as I can because I don't want to be a liability to my group.
I think I am leaning towards a black mage at this point. Can you tell me about the summoner class ? At least, I think that's what it's called.
When the world was young, the Sun bestowed upon me his crown; always will I light your darkest hour.
I think warrior would probably be a good choice for me as well. It seem'd like that have a pretty good kit. Does anyone go against the grain, and play a DPS warrior ?You will probably want to avoid DRG and MNK due to their potential being greatest when they are not in front of a monster. I'd recommend Arcanist -> Summoner also. They have pets that can tank for solo content. Since most of their damage is DoTs and pets can/will continue to act on their own, if you go afk for a minute it's possible no one will notice.
on topic: In my opinion, BLM is the job for you. It is easy to use, and in the long run can be a powerful mage, with a few CC magic to help on rough situations.
off topic: Have you tried Free To Play MMOs? There are a few easy going games out there. Think about that after you play a little. Because paying $13-$15 monthly to play a little sometimes is rough, depending on the income. But other than that, FFXIV is extremely casual friendly in almost every aspect of the game. I play around 1-3 hours daily, if able, mostly solo, and I have yet to find a wall, content wise.
Welcome to Eorzea!
From ashes the Phoenix will arise, melting all to begin anew.
Currently, I think I'm going to try warrior, bard, black mage. Then make my decision after that. My question is, what level should I play until to base my decision. I have limited play time, so I don't want it to be too high. I'm thinking in the 10-15 range.

I tried SWKOTOR free mmo, played for about a month, and hated it. I have a good job, and I can certainly spare 15 bucks a month or whatever the price is. The thing that attracted to me to this game is the way the class/job system works. I like the idea that I have to level a class to 30, and a sub class to 15 to unlock my main advanced class.
