My VPN expired. Back to rubberbanding when the servers are busy.

    Hello all;
I have played MMO's forever basically and have been a 'raider' for a long time. I bought this game two months ago and since that time I have everything on farm aside from T5 starting 4 weeks ago. It took me one month to clear and farm said content. My point is, I am not a 'bad/poor' player.

To do all of this I had to download WTFast as I constantly get rubber banding everywhere in game. Once I downloaded WTFast the problem went away, but even still sometimes I could see slight rubber banding. Now my WTFast account just expired and I am conflicted as to what I want to do. I have yet to log on today but I am hoping the rubber banding issues were resolved due to the maintenance last night. I highly doubt it though sadly

    Here are my specs:
    Verizon FIOS
    Win 8.1
    I7 2600k
    GTX 680
    Vertex 3 SSD

Obviously as any PC gamer can tell you, it is not my hardware. Every other MMO and PC/PS4 game I have runs with zero issue. I can connect to BF4 servers much farther away from me and have zero issue. I live in Buffalo, NY so I am not ridiculously far from their data centers.

Verizon is not throttling my DATA. Contrary to popular belief they do not care what I stream/torrent/play. I can prove this to myself as I can download and upload as many torrents as I want and my connection will be at 100% usage.

I know many people on these forums want to disagree and call me a noob or blame Verizon in defense of SE and I understand that as you are just defending a game you love. Well I really like this game as well and so do many others. Unfortunately there is a huge packet loss issue that needs to be addressed by SE.

So the only real question is will SE take care of this problem fast enough? They have to see the issue, there is no way they don't. If it wasn't their fault you better believe they would be quick to say so. Their silence on the matter proves who the guilty party is. This is a monthly subscription MMO. This should not be an issue. SE please fix this or this game will be remembered no differently than 1.0....a failure. It's 2014. There should be no lag.

Just to clarify as well. There is nothing we can do as consumers. SE has to make the phone calls.

Since the rubberbanding problem is due to a bad node between most users and the server (Tata Communications and Level3 I'm looking at you) the server maintenance probably didn't do anything to help.

without it its kinda hit ot miss depeding on the time of day it seems.

I play with a few people that have this issue, they are also on Verizon FIOS. They pretty much don't login anymore and when they do they have to use a VPN service that they pay for. I don't blame them for not wanting to play. It is frustrating neither side is interested doing anything to fix the offending node(s) (SE opening talks/VZ working with Level 3).

It has been like this since patch 2.1 went live. I've compared my trace routes with them and they hit the same nodes as me as the hops near SE's NA/EU datacenter and for some reason the 5th (Usually) from the last hop is the offending node. (4.69.141.1). This is the traceroute from my ISP that is not VZ FIOS (I don't have the issue). I'm sure if folks on FIOS did the same traceroute their ae-11-11.car2.Montreal2.Level3.net node would have insane ping times as the packets travel through the offending node and onto SE's servers.

    Code:
     13 40 ms 40 ms 40 ms ae-5-5.car1.Montreal2.Level3.net [4.69.141.5]
     14 41 ms 40 ms * ae-11-11.car2.Montreal2.Level3.net [4.69.141.1]
     15 40 ms 40 ms 41 ms ORMUCO-COMM.car2.Montreal2.Level3.net [4.59.178.74]

Can confirm for you that the server maintenance did not solve the problem, but the problem isn't SE's either - it's Verizon. You're correct that they do not throttle, but they do control their routing and currently they route through that bad Level3 node you keep hearing about.

Might try Battleping or one of the other lower priced services, doesn't solve the issue but it'd save you a few bucks and allow you to keep playing.

Here is a big topic on it as well and there are a ton more on it.

Verizon and that bad node have all been contacted and informed but it would be nice to hear from SE on this since this only started to happen after 2.1 with the switch to separate data centers. Who cares who is at fault just knowing SE is willing to work on helping people out so they can play the game they pay for would be nice.

If you were using a VPN and most of your problem went away then it is a problem with you ISP (torrenting is not the same an an MMO). Between you an SE that is not between you and the VPN is affecting your connection.

One things you can do. Turn the graphics down and minimize dynamic content displayed (especially from others) such as effects.

I already know you are going to tell me that is not the issue as it does not affect you when you play other games. However this game does display a large amount of content (up to 100 players at once). This can and does cause rubber banding, even on lower graphics games.

    Hope that helps.

I'm Verizon FIOS and the rubber-banding, stop 'n' surge, experience began right after 2.1, as with so many others. I live along the U.S. east coast, so the distance shouldn't be too awful to eastern Canada. I finally broke down and constructed my own VPN through a Digital Ocean droplet (DO's physically located in New York City, I believe). Ok, a tech savvy FC-mate did it, not me, as there's no way I could have figured it out on my own. For just $5 a month, it gives you the capacity to run maybe 15 VPNs for FC members. That's a good deal and it has entirely eliminated my lag.

But I do agree with the basic issue of this thread. We shouldn't have to do this, and I would have hoped SE would have gotten this resolved with Verizon by now.

Like Lurkios mentioned above; when you see things working great with a VPN service but then fail without it has nothing to do with SE and their servers. This is entirely on the routes being used by the ISP you're on and the backhaul they're going through.

Level3 Communications is a huge company and they provide linkage for a goodly part of the world and most traffic flows through them. And let me tell you... Getting multiple service providers to work together to get something like this fixed? Pain in the ass.

I work IT for a large company and because we're Global we work very closely with our managed internet service provider. And let me tell you... When routing issues pop up it takes a huge amount of time and effort just to get the provider to admit it, let alone fix it. I feel for consumers having to bash their head against that kind of wall without a significant amount of capital to back them up.

Verizon has been harassed by 1000s if not more regarding poor performing Level 3 nodes from NY to Chicago and Montreal. Verizon isn't the only ISP affected. All the little guys, including Orumco need to beat up on the big guy. With Verizon all you have to do is mention Level 3 Montreal/NY speed issues and they will submit it to Level 3. I resubmit to Verizon every week and they don't even bother going through the scripted tech (check your computer/line/ONT/Modem) bit anymore.
