On the lower levels, try to start with Blizzard 1 (for the Heavy - skip if you have a tank) and Thunder 1 (for the Thundercloud procs). When Thunder is active, go all out on Fire 1 till low MP then either go Blizzard 1 or Transpose into Thunder 1. Your best spell when in a group (and even when solo) is Sleep - especially when it becomes AoE.

On higher levels, you'll want to be doing something like this: Thunder 2 - Fire 3 - Fire 1 spam (+ procs of Thundercloud for Thunder 3 and Firestarter for Fire 3) - Blizzard 3 - repeat. That's the basic rotation and you can make it much more complex by adding Flares to the mix and depending on when you like to use Transpose.

The AoE rotation is Fire 3 - Fire 2 spam - Flare - Convert - Fire 2 - Flare - Transpose - repeat. Some like to add another Flare by using Ethers, but the damage output isn't that much higher since foes are usually dead anyway by that point.

There's a ton more info in the DPS section of these boards if you need it.

Are you supposed to use transpose every time you switch between blizzard and fire?

Doing so allows you to switch to the new mode five seconds quicker. If you change from Astral Fire to Umbral Ice for instance just by using Blizzard, it takes 2.5 seconds for one Blizzard that just removes the Astral Fire and then another 2.5 seconds for a second Blizzard before you actually get the Umbral Ice effect. You could have had that Umbral Ice effect immediately and therefore an extra five seconds of its MP regeneration if you'd used Transpose. Similarly, once your MP is restored, you'll want to get into the higher DPS of Astral Fire quickly.

I've also gotten into a pattern of using Transpose whenever I end a fight in Astral Fire mode. That switch to Umbral Ice when the fight ends makes recouping MP to be ready for another fight significantly faster.

It helps, since it's a no MP swap. When you get the III spells it's better to use those however.

Transpose is only really when you are lower levels as when you get higher you can just use Ice 3 and Fire 3 which brings you straight to Umbral Ice and Astral Fire respectively.
It still situation dependant as well because casting ice 3 for instance takes longer then if you would transpose but the tradeoff is ice 3 fills up your mp while for instance transpose> ice would require multiple ice casts to fill your mp. Also convert is great when you get that ability as well.
I have not really done testing on casting times but know that the dps section of the forum many have done so
