A petition for the alteration of SE's copyright policy (Music in Videos)

Friendly reminder to please keep your posts free from anything that can be construed as defamation, as many defamatory or insulting posts can be used as an excuse to delete the thread.

I'm going to keep the OP as unbiased as possible, post only the facts, and allow you to choose your own opinion.

To preface, the current policy is as below, directly quoted from http://support.na.square-enix.com/ru...5382&tag=authc

Guidelines for Music and Sounds

- You may only use music as it is incorporated in FFXIV;
- When showing gameplay, you may not replace the FFXIV music with third party music;
- You may not play FFXIV music alone (i.e., without accompanying gameplay footage), or with third party materials;
- You may not use the song track entitled "Answers."

Next, the facts.

Fact: You may not create a pvp video with any alterations to the sound.
Fact: If you do, you will be banned from the forums.
Fact: You will also have your Youtube account revoked.
Fact: SE is spending more time policing this copyright policy than they are policing the bots currently sitting in queue for ranked PvP matches. The thread linked above, the video in it was removed and the user banned within two days. How many bots have you reported, yet still see playing weeks later, ruining your matches, or stealing your farm spots?
Fact: From a business standpoint, there are no gains to this policy. Feel free to try and disprove this.
Fact: From a players standpoint, SE is actively snuffling out a source of free advertising, and a source of many players enjoyment.
Fact: There are no other MMOs with a dedicated Western server with such a strict copyright policy. I can't comb through Jap or Korean MMOs to see their policies, but from the ones I have played (Tera, BnS), I do not think any other Eastern company does this either.

If you disagree with this policy, I ask that you show your support with either a message stating your disagreement and reasons for your disagreement, or a simple /sign if you feel your reasons have been properly stated previously in the thread. I will update OP periodically to add your names in. I will add your name if you post with implicit approval. If you don't wish for that, state so in your post.

Square-Enix is very backwards when it comes to social media.

They should allow third-party music and let people upload music videos, whether it's PvE content or PvP... these things only PROMOTE the game, which means more money in Squares pockets.

Why they don't allow this is mind boggling.

It does matter, actually. SE is actively policing videos, as evidenced by Warrage's video being removed from Youtube after a copyright claim from SE, then having his YT account revoked.

I agree completely. Allowing gameplay videos to be edited in a tasteful way (cutting scenes, adding third party music, etc) would only make the game BETTER. It would make people want to play, or provide a sense of nostalgia for people who already do. Even if it wasn't a particularly nostalgic video, I might still be impressed by how well it was edited. I see zero bad publicity from this.

The only time I can (sort of) understand SE's current policy is when game glitches are involved. You don't want the glitches in your game exposed to the world, so I sort of understand why they took the videos down that showed people running around with their arms out and feet moving independently from their body. I thought those videos were funny, but at least I understood why they were removed.

Making fan-made videos with all the bells and whistles, external music included, is extremely fun. I'm sad I can't use that outlet with this game or risk some severe consequences.

And within minutes, it will be back up, with its signatures back up. And if accounts go down, new ones will be made. If IPs are blocked, new ones will be accessed.

We as a customer have a right to voice our dissatisfaction, and these forums are the venue for exactly that.
