Marking is not about losing aggro, it's about focusing down a target, which is always what people should be doing as DPS. For trash, at least.

That said. I think I agree with Diezel. I have all of the marks on my hotbar from WAR anyway. I think I am just going to mark stuff myself if the tank is too lazy to do it.

not to target the enemy the tank wants me to kill, i use the enemy unit frames for that

i actually don't kill what the tank wants me to kill, i kill whatever is taking the most damage. and when i tank, i make sure whatever is taking the most damage is attacking me.

That's seems pretty backwards to me. As a tank, you are the party leader, and hate management should be proactive, not reactive as you describe. If you are a good tank, no one should take aggro from you. Marking is more efficent, plain and simple. And way easier for tanks that are out geared by DPS. Oh, and a bunch of other reasons...see some of the other comments here.

This is only really true early on. At end game, good tanks maintain aggro on everything at once so everyone can comfortably AOE without worrying about it. In this case, marking really is pointless. I only mark at end game if an add needs to die ASAP.

As a DRG, or any other form of DPS, I have it bound to my Z key (Target Target of Target) and will use it in dungeons of all tiers where the tank is not marking. I'll tap it after a pull if its not already obvious what the tank is fighting, just to make sure I snap to what he is threating. Usually it doesn't matter but hey if it helps make his job a little easier why not?

When I'm running as a damage role I always set tank as focus and attack their target unless marked otherwise. I don't understand why this is such a hard concept for many people; you don't have to view the main tank as the party leader, but they should be viewed as the battle leader (unless they are completely inept, in which case it's pretty much a free-for-all if they can't humble themselves to learn).

When it comes to tanking 4-man content, I can't be assed to mark since you can power through pretty much anything with i80+ geared and skilled players no mater what they focus or not. Tanking 8-mans is a bit different though; if the targets can be marked before battle I'll do it myself, but if they need to be marked as they spawn I'll ask for the most competent ranged player to do so to allow myself and/or the other tank to freely pick them up and snap hate w/o hesitation.

If the tank isn't marking, he should be flexible enough to attack the appropriate target. Likewise, it's the DPS's job to be on the same page and attack the same creature.

i've considered making tt macros for my scholar's DoTs, but it's not really a huge deal

To those who responded to me, marking is really only beneficial pre-lvl 50 content, I agree. There isnt much i mark in raids groups, but I will still mark Haukke/Copperbell HM, AK, Pharos. If you dont need to Mark in order to take aggro early on, great for you.

But, remember that you are making an example for newer players. Not every tank (most tanks even) are good tanks that know how to maintain all aggro without marking, and if your "new to the game" DPS is hitting whatever they want to hit, they are being taught wrong, and will potentially screw things up for future party members. As a leader (which a tank is), it is preferred you Mark. can only make things easier. if you dont have the room to mark, theres a good 1 button macro for that I can share.
