I really want to see a class that utilizes the gunblade make its way into XIV. Possibly a mix of both melee and ranged. Speculation anyone?

There are characters with gunblades so consider it very possible.
I like this idea but I have no idea about weather or not it was a past topic for discussion. So yes! good idea.
Though it is a bit futuristic, put aside the aesthetics from the cheesy, retro robot voice and replace it with a ffxiv texture/magitek-ish feeling instead, then I'd like to see something that functions like the gunblade that Alphas uses in the anime/manga Zetman.
I dunno if we'll get a class surrounding it, but I would accept Gunblade class weapons for Gladiator to give them a new bonus when attacking or something.
but in many FF world....nothing is futuristicI like this idea but I have no idea about weather or not it was a past topic for discussion. So yes! good idea.

in time of sword and spell but got robot enemy, space ship
Characters actually - it's a standard Garlean weapon type. However it's usually only reserved for crack troops like Imperial Centurions, and Legati like Gaius. Regular grunts usually use more mundane weapons like swords and spears. And for that matter, the Garlean gunblade is basically just a pistol with a long sword blade attached to the side of the barrel - it's nothing like the FFVIII and XIII version.
And speaking of FFXIII, Lightning's gunblade the Blazefire Sabre is actually useable by players - it's the GLA/PLD FFXIII weapon gained through the 'Lightning Strikes' event which will be returning tomorrow. Unfortunately though, it's still just a sword weapon - the gun part is non functional, making the weapon nothing more than a sword with a fancy fold out blade. But it's still cool nonetheless.
A gunblade could be cool. I'd like to see a combo melee ranged class tho but as more of a gangplank style cutlass and musket class which would fit nicely in the ff14 world.
One word: Musketeer
They've already proven with arcanist that they are using to at least some extent what was there in 1.0. Also, limsa is still the only city with only two classes, and of course, the musketeer just fits perfectly in the limsa theme.
What it will be as far as role is concerned...not even going to try and speculate, too many possibilities. Either way, the next time there's a content update or expansion where they try to be elusive and just say "a new job is coming" you can be pretttty sure it's musketeer
Currently there are 6 "Gunweapon" models in game (excluding the Blazefire saber), a generic gunblade (used by ranking Garlean troops), the gunblade Heirsbane/No. IX (wielded by Gaius van Baelsar), the gunshields Tartarus (dual wielded by Rhitahtyn sas Arvina), the gunhalberd* Bradamante (formerly used by Nael van Darnus), the gunbaghnakhs Algea (used by Livia sas Junius) and the gunhammer Mjolnir (used by Nero tol Scaeva).
As of right now they have the models to arm the Gladiator with a gunblade and gunshield, the marauder with a gunhammer, the pugilist with gunbaghnaks and the Lancer with a gunhalberd. They may just be wait for the right time or trying to figure out a way to give them trigger actions to make them feel like gunweapons.
*Bradamante is interesting because it seems to be currently in the hands of a infamous weapons collector and may be one of the rewards for completing a battle on a big bridge.
