How does the Fantasia item work?

I'm going to be subbing soon and when I get the Fantasia Potion or whatever it's called, there are a number of minor things I want to change about my character's appearance.

The thing is, since I only get one crack at this, I don't want to go in blind. How does the item work? Are you allowed to employ previously-saved templates to apply changes (thus giving you a chance to make sure everything is right before even using the recustomization)? If you don't use a template, does it load your current appearance to make the changes on? Or does it start with a clean character?

Understandably, I don't want to spend a lot of time mucking around with the thing on the off chance an internet disconnect screws up everything.

Although I haven't used any of my Fantasias yet (1.0 players such as myself got given an extra one besides the Veteran rewards one due to many players wanting to change their 1.0 character after launch), from what I understand, it's an item you use in the game (in other words, you map it to your hotbar and use it like any other item). Then, the next time you login, on the character selection screen for that character there will be an option to allow you to alter your character's appearance, race and gender.

I presume previously saved character creation templates could be used, as they just affect things you can change via the Fantasia, but again I haven't changed my character's appearance so I wouldn't know for sure.

I have heard that apparently Square Enix are considering offering more Fantasias for sale via the Mogstation in the future, but there's nothing confirmed about that yet sadly.

Really, if it's only minor things about your character's appearance (such as hairstyle/colour), the aesthetician option is a better alternative, as you can use that as much times as you want in the game, although it costs gil to do so.

Skin color, hair color, eye color, and tail shape are all on the chopping block. I'm not going to make dramatic changes, but I am a stickler, and am wholly unsatisfied with how I currently look. I have heard about the Mogstation item as well, but I'd prefer just to get things right the first (or, really, second) time.

Yes, you can load saved appearances. You can also cancel it entirely and start over. I just used mine this week because I kind of felt like my character looked a little derpy. Not sure if I'm super happy with what I picked, but I'm stuck with it. Everything but job, name and server can be changed.

After you use the item in-game, you have to log out to be able to edit your character. Or you could just keep playing and do it some other day.

The next time you log on, at character selection screen, you'll notice a new icon in front of the character that had used a Fantasia potion. Right click on the character for the option to edit appearances.

This will bring you to the same screen as the character creation screen where you customize the character's appearance, asking you whether you want to load a saved appearance.

When you're finished, you click on the tick at the bottom and the game asks you for confirmation that this is what you want. If not, you can cancel the whole thing, go back to the character selection screen, and start over or just log in back to the game without changing your appearance and keep playing; that option to edit will just stay there until you use it up.
