Well, in all frankness, we never really SAW Tanaka's vision.. only half-baked parts of it. For all we know, once it was finished, it may have been one of the best MMO games to date, or it could have been total crap, We'll never really know.

Instead, the game was rushed out the door a full year before it should have been, the players saw the half-baked mess, hated it, and started yelling for change that would bring the game back into familiar territory (FFXI, WoW style).

I'm neither willing nor able to blame Tanaka's vision for FFXIV...

His execution?
Perhaps.

The forces that pushed this game to be released long ahead of it's time?
Definitely.
