Wow...a completely sensible mechanic...who would have thought it. I can swap gear anytime I want already. There's just a time/penalty associated with doing so while being stomped on by a giant buffalo.you can, you just suffer a uncomfortable debuff for awhile. essentially they just didnt want it to be on the level of ffxi 1 second macro gear swaps. you can change your strategies, actions and gear in a fight, but you will have to put away your weapon, and suffer some debuff time.
I know it, but I dont like the debuff so I would prefer the system I proposed :P
Give us a 5 min "recast" before being able to change a piece of equipment again, maybe forcing us to going in passive mode first too*; but no debuff please! That's just a silly punishment imho
*and, btw, that wouldnt be so nice either, especially for claim issues, etc

Lol at people that says no-gear-swap = the end of the world.
You can still make gears situational and not makes gears obselete after 3 months, in a game where 4man parties is to be expected alot in the future, you would need alot of gears set to be versatile to adapt to alot of situation. Also, what is the point of having content lasts for more than a year? No one in their right mind would fafnir for 3 years if it didn't drop the best equips, it is a horrible design of a content, no one should fight that horribly easy lizard that people call a challenge in ffxi for more than 1 year.

You're comparing content that's there "just 'cause" and are offshoots of the mission storylines (hence why they could afford to be so timesinky about it) with endgame content tied to a storyline, and more often than not the focal point of the story.I am sorry but atm there is no MMO out there that has the variety that XI had, too many people focus on the smallest part of XIs endgame which was crazy hardcore.
WoW has one of the worst endgames out there, it is just the fact so few people realize it because that is what they where first exposed to and every mmo after WoW has copied it.
WoW's endgame is a few raids, a few dungeons
Let us please not open that can of worms.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
Which one? You mean the can of worms that is, "WoW is just Diablo II with more players and a subscription fee"? Or the "By not supporting past content and areas outside the latest expansion, WoW is as much an MMORPG as Sonic the Hedgehog" can? Or the can of "The definition of an MMORPG is an online persistent world shared by many players who advance their characters through RPG mechanics, but because WoW sacrifices the majority of its world to obsolescence through a constant churn of expansions and level caps it has severely bastardized the genre it was born from" worms? You're comparing content that's there "just 'cause" and are offshoots of the mission storylines (hence why they could afford to be so timesinky about it) with endgame content tied to a storyline, and more often than not the focal point of the story.
Let us please not open that can of worms.
Just trying to make sure I don't open the wrong can here.
My name is a killing word.
(Seriously: "Caerith" was a forbidden name when I signed up on the forums.)
Eorzea should be a world, not a lobby.
Awesome news! ^^ This was a point i really hated in FFXI and i was afraid we would end having this here too. Thumbs up to Matsui (can't even believe i'm saying this!)Spoke with Battle Master Matsui to get the lowdown on the whole gear swapping question that's got you all buzzin'. In regards to swapping gear while in battle, since changing certain gear while in battle will change your class in FFXIV, we're not planning to make it possible to swap gear in battle. This direction will not change in the future.
We are focusing instead on making adjustments with the battle-related fixes to ensure that you can battle to your utmost ability without having to rely on changing gear multiple times mid-fight.
As much as I truly enjoyed swapping in different gear for weapon skills in XI, I think we should move on from it.
Though outside of party play I would macros for swapping gear and abilities to be saved/remembered somehow, instant and not one piece/ability at a time, its just very cumbersome right now.

Please don't turn this into FFX-2.14

Hahaha!
What is this? Barbie Fantasy?
This, very much so. And to expand on this point, there is no reason you have to use the gear on a session by session. There's nothing stopping you from changing gear/classes between fight or before bossesJust because gear swapping mid-battle isn't allowed doesn't mean that horizontal gear progression has to become obsolete. If the game is designed well then equipment can still be situational, just on a session-by-session basis rather than for each individual action.
One day you might do a dungeon with monsters that spam blunt AoE attacks, so you decided it would be more efficient to switch some of your STR gear for other pieces that cut a high % of blunt damage. The next day you might run a dungeon with monsters that have fairly low evasion, so you can afford to trade out some gear with accuracy bonuses for others that will increase your damage.
