I watched this happen to DRG legs in Coil, so I can understand how you feel. Rules are rules.
I actually do something similar for my alt. Being as Pld main and the demand for tanks, I just make my own group and block the class of gear I wish to roll on and make it clear at the start that's my intention. I'm always down to share rolls however I wish there was a way to select the job I wish to roll need as other then "run what your brung" system.
i always ask the loot rules before i ever enter a dungeon or won't leave from the starting area if they don't answer. find out the loot rules they want to use before you help them kill the mob. if i don't like the rules they plan to use i just tell them no thanks and leave.

tbh i'd be glad if someone like that blacklisted me, it would save me the trouble of having to play with them again.
i'd roll just as i intended to and if they got upset with me i'd tell them they should be upfront with everyone next time instead of trying to take advantage of other players.
I don't deal with idiots trying to use groups to farm them gear.
If you want to claim it- solo it. Otherwise, be ready to roll. (Of course statics have rules and those get followed- but if your pugged, it's a pug group)
Is there some secret "pug-code"?
If they didn't bring it up beforehand, it's on them and you should just need.
Who is to say what is someone's "main job"? Especially till waiting until after a loot drops, to then declare: "oh my main job is X, so that is loot for me, kthx!" That is just dumb...lol I wouldn't buy their ploy unless I knew them.

If it's not declared before the start, just roll whatever you want too.

If they didn't make it clear before the battle was engaged you disregard what they have to say. Entirely your discretion.
If no rules are agreed to beforehand then you use XIV's rules: Need if you can, otherwise Greed.
When we PUG a replacement for coil the same rules apply for them as for us, though slightly different to the above rule: If the gear for the job you are currently on drops: Need on it. If no-one will/can Need on it, then you can greed on it if you have the job @ 50.
The only exception used to be Turn 2 where the BLM switched to healer for enrage. Now he has full Turn 2 BLM drops, there are no more exceptions.
There's been no drama this way, the rules are explained before first mob is engaged, and lots of PUG players have gotten their gear through us.
