    I can't say I ever pay any attention to ability animations. I'd just as soon have the abilities fire instantly when the key is hit, and let you move on to casting the next one, interrupting the previous animation if needed. If you want to view the pretty animations, slowly attack a practice dummy and wait for each one to finish.

    I have a feeling that the animation lock is a product of whatever less-that-satisfactory engine that FFXIV is built on.

    Basically, what you're really looking for is FFXVI.

    I assume we are talking about the GCD, since very few abilities put you in an "animation lock", if you want to see actual animation lock then look at Monster Hunter or the Souls games which actually force you to commit to an attack.

    The GCD is also just a part of tab-target, hotbar mmo combat. WoW has this as well, it's just way shorter.
    What happens if you remove the GCD or make it too fast is a spam fest, you can see this in ESO for example where you are constantly spamming your no cooldown, no GCD abilities until your hands fall off, we are talking 3-4 abilities within a second, it's a mess.

    What animation locks? Maybe it was different years ago (i don't remember anymore), but the only skill i remember from the top of my head that locks you in animation nowadays is spineshatter dive on dragoon. I can just run circles around monsters while i beat them up on physical ranged/melee/tank if i want. Even casters can just walk out of casting animation whenever they want.

    There are a few more, not counting all the abilities with a cast time.

    Drg jumps all put you into a very very short animation lock, except Stardiver which puts you into a slightly longer one. Ninja's Assassinate puts you into one, as does Ten-Chi-Jin (you can technically move but it immediately cancels the ability). Then you have all the limit breaks which put you into an animation lock after the cast is finished.


    That's still not a lot, which is why I assume we're talking about something completely different and just calling it animation lock. Most abilities in this game do not lock you in place while their animation plays out.

    Hasn't been mentioned. But I love MCH animation pulls you back towards the mob even though you are trying to move away and still dps. "It wasn't me. I really didn't walk back into the attack it was the animation."
