Why crank it up to 11? Why don't you just make 10 louder?

Side note, why would they ever need to update the level cap, if the gear keeps climbing like this?
Gear is already 40-45 levels higher than the characters at this point.
So lets say they up the level cap to 75, or 100 today.
They would still be wearing the I95 gear, but people would be bitching about having to 'grind' the exp.
Yoshi mentioned that the level cap would go up in the future. But iLevels should only outpace actual levels by 5ish until you hit your final level cap.
FFXI took ages to get to a lv99 cap. And only once the cap had increased to its final amount, did Ilevel gear start coming out.
If iLevel 110+ gear comes from this next patch, what would be the point in increasing the character level at that point?
For that matter, why did we have to level to 50 in the first place? Why not just give us all abilities at lv1 and base progression on gear.

Because character levels and item levels are a simplistic and visible aspect of your character's power, and it's long been an established norm in RPG to use these numbers to make players feel stronger.
What you're asking there is perfectly valid questions, and the answer would be that levels is a base design aspect of this game, that's the only reason we have it.

See FATE's and Low-level duty roulette. 20-50, only doing sastasha teaches much about tanking.
But like many base design aspects, it feels like it was only included to hit a check box on the list of things an mmo should have, like crafting. It's included, but you don't really need it.Because character levels and item levels are a simplistic and visible aspect of your character's power, and it's long been an established norm in RPG to use these numbers to make players feel stronger.
