The smartest thing SE could do is make it so all items received from turn 5 while under the echo buff are just i90 like they were before. That way pre echo or those who win without echo can have the "i95" version showing there feat and making everyone happy. The elitist get their gold star to help them sleep at night and the rest can get the weapons that will work just fine because post 2.2 it REALLY won't matter.
That would work - but say the Ilevel raises to 110 at 2.2. Twintania is going to be much easier by default. In 5 years when there's ilevel 300 gear floating about - Twintania is going to be a total joke. That's why I feel it's important to implement a "Time Capsule" achievement system. So 5 years from now, a player who wasn't around when Twintania was initially released - can try to earn an achievement by defeating Twintania with gear under Ilevel 91 and without an echo buff. There could ultimately be a "Time Capsule" mount that is rewarded for completing several different "Time Capsule" achievements, etc.
I don't see a problem with special rewards for completing certain content. Be it a mount or special title. Hardcore players will get it first, casuals will want it but may not be able to get it right away. New content comes out, casuals get more powerful gear and maybe now the content gets a nerf. Casual rejoices! He got that special mount, then sees the hardcore dude riding around some new special mount. The cycle repeats.
The casual got his reward, hardcore still has the latest and greatest to brag about.
There is not enough "new" content to warrant catching-up the casuals. Typically MMOs will help the casuals catch-up when an expansion is released (because an expansion brings a plethora of content). Removing the lockout to coil (and implementing echo) will quickly give most everyone I-level 90 gear (turns 1 and 2 are quick and easy and offer each job 6 pieces of i-level 90 gear). Why would SE want to make sure everyone has I-level 90 gear? If everyone has I-level 90 gear, that means that everyone is ready to participate in turns 6-9 which will be the hardest content available for an entire 6 months. Patch 2.3 will be outdated before it is even released. If everyone has I-level 90 gear then the only viable content will be turns 6-9, extreme leviathan and "possibly" extreme moogle and the three new dungeons (all prior content will be made completely irrelevant a mere 6.5 months into the game).
If you just hit level 50 today you are not far behind. You don't need a catch-up. If you just hit 50 today - would you honestly be worried about making it to turn 9 of coil in 7 and a half months? Because that's how much time you would likely have before new turns are added. You bring everyone to turns 6-9 and you are going to see people drop like flies. There is simply not enough content.
