It is actually impossible unless you're just totally spacing out. Even for a 40 durability 2-star craft if you have the typical 347 craftsmanship requirement you can just use careful synthesis I 4 times and there's 0 chance of failure. Substitute that with steady hand + basic synthesis if you want to be really gimp.
