    Ffxi, Eve online, Maple Story, Star Wars Galaxies, etc...
    I'm not saying they're better in their entirety, as mmos have improved on a lot of mechanics, but they did present alternative forms of progression to WoW. Also, I think Ultima Online, the first mmo, didn't do what WoWdid either.

    Of those, I have only played FFXI. It had several YEARS to build it's horizontal progression. In fact, it took it 3 expansions to offer you real choice of gear and not only "the-best-gear vs the-gear-I-can-afford", which is not...a choice.
