I'm not sure if it's a mental thing, a PS3 thing, or if those actions are timed to be be like "are you sure you really wanna hit this button right now?" with delay. I swear Hallowed Ground feels like it takes longer to execute and I have to bash it for it to trigger. Maybe its just me in the moment or maybe its just PS3.
happens to me on PS3 and PC =\ the effect does not occur until after the animation it's just how the abilities are.

That's not really a great thing in games, that's why there is a trade off, more along the lines of:
I'm going to die soon, glad I was aware enough to notice it, as in a few milliseconds I WILL BE INVICNIBLE!!
I play for fun, if you don't like it don't play it.

It ties directly into that same client/server communication issue that punishes some users so badly during Titan. You press the button, your machine checks it against the server. If the server says you were a half a second too late but on your screen you clearly weren't, you lose.
2 seconds before you know you are going to die your healer has plenty of time to heal you away from demise, you need holmgang/HG for when your healer has no time to save you at all. Otherwise you just waste it gaining nothing but a long cooldown.
I agree that they should have ample time, and it would definitely be nice to have HG and Holm function as an actual "Oh Sh*t!" button. However, as they work now it's completely possible to anticipate when you're going to need them and use it to lighten the load on the healers.
Example being Turn 4 when the second Dreadnaught drops, can grab the second one, pop HG, healer tops you off and then can focus on other things (namely the OT) for the duration of HG.

Abilities activate at the end of the animation. This applies to just about everything - just ask a healer.
Best PLD ability to see if for yourself is Rage of Halone. Use it on a non-aggroed enemy and watch: no damage or aggro occurs until the final swing hits.
