I actually like the fact that the FFXI and XIV weapons are more low key than the ones in the single player games.
It gives the online games a special flavour and actually, the pragmatic design ethic conceals some really nice detail
too.
Also I love the online FF's version of "epic" armours which are totally core to either the old FF's (FFXI's stuff was not called artifact and relic for nothing, go play something like FFIV and you will see what I mean). We dont get the juicy stuff in XIV yet but look at the story NPC's and the kind of stuff we can expect in the long run.
Some stuff would not look out of place in XIII and a LOT is reminiscent of X and XII clothing.
As for faves in the single player FF's I like a lot of them but for me, FFXIII simply topped the lot. Really great weapon designs all round (except for Snow's lol). Lightnings Gunblades range from the cool to the quirky. Fangs weapons are simply wonderful designs. In that game you need to take the less travelled path to see the best stuff too, upgarde the starter weapons... not the best stats or features but the designs are incredible.
Oops ! Sorry for rambling a bit but this is one of my fave topics ^^

i actually love the imaginary weapons that are over the top. it is part of the fantasy part in final fantasy. give me a gunblade over a heavy iron lance any day of the week.

I also don't want this game to turn into abyssea where we have gear that maxes all stats. I'm done with that kinda stuff, I was never into it.
I really want an onion knight for my Thaumaturge![]()
Your post made me think of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHA-_BxisocAs a trained combatant, I find that if the weapons are too plain then they just bore me...I look at mine all day long in real life, why would I want to look at them all day long in the game. But on the same token I don't like the "twice as big as me, glowing, burning, undead killing sword+99" type weapons as its not feasibly possible to wield the weapon its so big (you can take this into account with armor well).
I like weapons are armor that seem realistic with slight magical flair or with elegant designs (have swords with tassels or engraving on the blades, a crook with an orb of colored magic that faintly glows inside the crooks wrap, a staff that has been carved to look like the wood is wrapping around itself in an intricate manner) those are the kinds of details I want on weapons; I feel its a nice middle ground between too little and over the top. XI was heading in the right direction with the weapons its just too bad that PS2 got in the way.
Thank you, almighty trained combatant.
- To add, I'm all for some uniqueness in high level weaponry (and rare weapons/armour in general) to make it stand out, just not the way-over-the-top style of a lot of MMOs. Tanaka's style was too boring, but there's definitely a happy medium out there. I'd say based on the armour concepts we've seen and the style of the garlean empire, I'll be pretty happy with how it'll turn out in the end. I love that kind of vaguely technological but also rooted in final fantasy style that's in the black mage concept.

Case and point....
War Wolf's Sword is awesome... probably the best weapon I've seen in game...
SE could be going for contrast...
The lower level weapons look more plain and realistic so you appreciate getting the more epic weapons later....
But I think the stats could help you appreciate that
War Wolf's weapon design could be an R36 weapon and the designs could scale up from there and get more fantastic
And wouldn't you know it, I can't find a screenie of war wolf's weapon
