I can see it happen, later on in FFXI there were monsters which indeed charmed you and put you in a "costume" (Frogs that turned you into one and later on Vampyr mobs that would turn you into a bat.)

How about Zombie?

Also a status effect in FFXI, although not as you described.
All cures just stopped having any effect and the only way to get rid of it was to transfer it to the white mage with Sacrifice.

I know of XI's Zombie affect, but I still loved it from FFVIII, cast it on Biggs, and then when Wedge tried to heal him, Biggs would get hurt and yell at him... good times.
