To be honest, while the macro and pet system certainly could use improvements still, I find it quite convenient.

On Obey and place the pet performs really nicely. It won't blow CD until I tell her to.
Use macros if you need to empower something.
Use single cast Embrace and your own heals if you need to split heals.
Let her do her own thing and do damage if things are not heated.
