Forwarded FFXIV Ports and no more huge lag spikes ever!

So i had huge last spikes since i returned to the game 2 weeks ago and it was making the game unplayable, every min or two i would pause for up to 20 seconds at times while still able to move and cast but nothing moved and then boom dead.

I got an email from support linking me a special ffxiv site to forward the ports, which I've never needed to do ever on a game, so i followed the instructions for my router and now all day in over 10 dungeons and Titan HM I've not lagged once, even at prime time not a single pause or lag anymore.

So doing this simple port forward made my game from unplayable to perfect, if you had lag issues i suggest you try it out.

Wouldn't there be problems if you had multiple people playing the game from one connection?

I've found that Battleping works great for me, however I often have a friend over playing on the PS3 and obviously it doesn't work on there. It'd be cool if there was a way to fix lag on the PS3 without making it so none of the other clients can communicate.

That is seriously horrendous net code if it is getting buggered up in your router to the point you need to port forward.

RELATED,ESTABLISHED should be enough for ANYTHING.

but so far so good, still no lag, seems that it really did help. looks liek they must have done something in patch 2.1 to mess up packet trasnfers or something to make my router not like it without them open.

Wouldn't that be a seriously horrendous router then if it doesn't auto detect it?

If that solution help, than your router is buggy.

Portforwarding is to open ports in your firewall for incoming request and telling the router, where this shall get routed. Portforwarding is needed, when you run a server that shall be accessible from internet.

FF14 client is not listening any open ports as a server. So portforwarding makes no sense for it.

Well why do the tech support tell me to do it, and why did they go to great lengths to make a guide for every single router and model for this? like i said 3 days no lag, not once. i used to lag for 20 seconds every 1-2 mins before now not a single time in 3 days after doing this. so the results speak for themselves, weather it makes sense or not it works and most online games tell you to open your ports if you have lag, gw2, wow, rift, swtor, cod, bf etc all tell you to open ports, even on consoles like the xbox one and ps4.

You did notice, that the linked site is not a SE site?

Why they do that? Maybe because all these routers do have the same or similar issue.

I do know how routers, switches, firewalls, proxys, ... do work, as it is part of my work for that I do earn my money. Because of this, I can tell you, that portforwarding should not be needed for that game, when all networking components do their work, as they should, as the game is not acting as a server.

Also you should know a little bit about networking, before you open ports in your firewall and forward them to a computer. Every opened port inceases the risk of security issues.

I play many MMOs and I never, ever have to 'open ports' on any router I've ever used, which include D-Link, Linksys, ASUS and other brands. It never ceases to amuse me the advice the likes of Blizzard and SE come out with, the games 'just work'.
