Guild Wars 2 removed "the holy trinity" of tank/healer/damage since every class can and is all three of those. You just need people, not specific people. It's not a standard MMO, and that doesn't apply to this game without a complete rebuild which they are not about to do for the third time.

It's different enough, and that's all that matters. I have 2 level 50 tanks, I'm a good tank, and I hate tanking. I do it because it's needed and I can help my friends out with it. I would much happier as a DPS, but I'm a tank now and that's all there is to it. Tanking and healing are also thankless jobs that if something goes wrong you're the one that gets the blame. If a new level 50 is crazy pulling dungeons ahead of me and we can't clear it without wiping then the fault is the tanks and healers in not staying alive in their minds and it in no way is him being a tool and not doing his job.

Just like to chime in on the, "Go level a tank!" responses. My first job to 50 was Paladin, I then chose to level Monk. Sitting in DF for 20-30 minutes at a time, even longer before the DF changes, isn't going to be alleviated by switching to my tank. How is that going to level my Monk?

The main problem for me with playing a tank in this game is it is rarely fun and more often than not frustrating and punishing. I played a Paladin and Ninja tank in FF11 for over 6 years, a Paladin in Everquest for 4 years prior to that, and generally gravitate towards tanks in other MMOs. I enjoy tanking, I enjoy being that guy between everyone else and the mob saying, "You shall not pass!" Tanking in this game is simply not enjoyable for me, that might change if they add a new tanking job but the crux of the matter is encounter design is 99% dodging the big circle/cone of death and the unfixed and ever present lag in this game makes that problematic at the best of times.

I can handle a healer sucking and not healing me in time, I can handle derp DD who attack random mobs or try to pull hate off me for shits and giggles, I can't handle dodging crap on my screen and yet still being hit. Until they either resolve the glaring lag issues with this game or find a different mechanic other than AoE dodging to test players I don't ever see the tanking contingent being bloated in FFXIV.
