Dude, Mercy stroke is fun, and it does HUGE damage. You should get it
I call out," MERCY STROOOOKE!" in Mumble every time I use it.. so do all the other guys in my static XD

If you are serious about playing a melee DD, get them.
Not having all the essential/usefull skills from the other classes just means you are lazy.
Leveling something up to lv20-30 takes very little time in FFXIV.
And Mercy Stroke is not used to gain HP back. You just use it to increase dps because it's not on GCD.

This is the reason why it should be required.
I think you should get it - you don't have tons of cross-class you will be wanting to use anyway. I never say no to a 200 potency skill, especially considering that it's not on GCD (you can weave it), it's quick (easier to weave it). Only 20% of life? True, you won't get to use it often, but your job is to DPS. And you want to DPS as much as possible, instead of getting Foresight or god knows what.
Mercy Stroke isn't *required*...but it is highly recommended. Its a free 200 potency attack that can heal you if you time it right (which can potentially save you if things go bad). And its always fun fighting with two tanks and another melee (or two) to see who can get a Mercy Stroke kill :P
As for other cross-class skills for MNK...yeah, Invigorate IS required. Don't even not think about getting it, you WILL need it.
Blood for Blood is also a requirement; the only thing to remember is it does have a drawback, so you do have to know when to use it and when not to.
EDIT: your other two cross-class skills should be Bloodbath and either Keen Flurry or Foresight; its always good to have defensive CDs just in case things go bad (or T4...)

IMO there are only three skills that could be called required. Swiftcast, Invigorate and Provoke. Everything else is just a bonus nothing major.
Just from a DPS standpoint... wouldn't Impulse Drive be more valuable than Mercy Stroke? It is only 20 potency less than mercy stroke, and you can use it whenever.
I use it as an extra move for conflag that about it lol.
Impulse Drive is on the GCD, costs more TP than combo skills, and doesn't progress forms. As of 2.1, there is really no reason to use it anymore.
Mercy Stroke is not on the GCD, costs zero TP, and has no impact on progressing through forms. As of forever, there is really no reason to not use it.

Mercy Stroke is essentially Misery's End, if Misery's End had a 90 second cooldown.
