The profit I've seen from treasure maps is 5k, those maps cost anywhere from 10k-15k. So, 8 treasure maps is what 40k gil income out of dumping 80k (10k per map). You lose 40k. If you're banking on a rare drop, that's completely unreasonable as I know friends that have done over 35+ maps in an attempt to get a pet.
I'm not going to agree to disagree when your math is wrong . If you do a full round of 8 maps with a group (1 map each) the minimum amount of gil you're going to get per player is somewhere between 12.5 and 40K gil. Maps are 8k on my server. That means EACH player has made between 4-32K gil. Not to mention you get random mats (including Philo) thrown in to boost the bottom line, plus you have the chance of getting the rare minion.

    You could:
    - Spam HM primals for furniture items
    - Do battle leves
    - Supplement income with dailies and roulette
    - Spam an easy level 50 dungeon to farm gil

There are enough things that you can do to make money on a battle class, certainly enough to be able to repair your gear and keep your head above water.

I also disagree with the notion that simply spamming dungeons for Philo tomes should be able to make you incredibly wealthy, because it shouldn't. I think it was a massive mistake to value those items so highly in the first place.

This no longer works. I got both Garuda's Feather and Titan's Heart a little after 2.1 launched. Titan's Heart went up for 100k, sold a week later after being undercut by 80k. Garuda's Feather has yet to sell, its currently at 200g on Cactuar, when it was over 50k a few weeks ago. And I keep seeing that price get lower and lower each day.

If you want to make money the only real way to do so is in the food market and provisioning supplies. Look around for things that sell for around 300 or so gil on the auction house and then find the monsters that drop them. Night milk is pretty expensive on my server at about 500 gil a pop and you can get them fairly easily from buffallos. Alternatively you can level botany and keep an eye out for whatever food material is in short supply. People farm apkallu eggs pretty frequently so you should look for whenever that camp isn't taken because they are a key ingredient in la noscean toast, omelettes, and deviled eggs. The key is to make sure you are checking the market wards frequently for what is either out of stock or in high demand. There is money to be made, you just need to know where to look for it. I started looking for ways to make money about a week and a half ago and I have made around 2.5 mil total while spending about 200k just to finish a luminary tool and a bit more on an HQ goldsmithing set because I was dumb and settled for NQ on launch. MAYBE if you hadn't abandoned me for balmung I could help you make some money but since I don't know what the economy is like on your server I can't help too much outside of what I just said.

The big issue is simply the fact that they released the content the way they did and we are going to have to wait about 6 months from launch for them to release the next real big set of content for end game. My assumption is that they will probably release the next tier of tomestones and crafted gear at that point with the possibility of a higher level of materia and that will probably be the next time anyone can make any sort of real money if it isn't their primary goal.

    @Req,

First off, Heya Req! I hope you've been well!

Thanks for the suggestions. Aside from gathering, which I stated earlier is not part of my argument here, most of the farming mats crash within a couple days. The eggs were a good go to, however, now they're just not worth it to farm. This is on my server. Unfortunately for us, the price fluctuations are pretty terrible.

Using an NPC-obtained item is a terrible base for an economy.

How about making craftable items from only gathered/farmed materials useful in endgame? Or make the levelling process take longer and make it harder so low-mid tier equipment is not skippable? Or make food and medicine effects stronger (and recasts on meds lower) and bosses harder so that you *need* to go in with food and meds or you won't win, even in levelling dungeons?

Essentially, the entire game is a cake walk with quest rewards and dungeon drops up to coil meaning the only materials that have any value are for endgame consumables. The only reason there's any market for any mats for anything else is for people levelling crafting/gathering. As more people realise that, the market will drop still further.

Well Philo Tomes are damn near handed to you so it is expected to see the prices reflected to that change. On my server they 3k-3.5k depending on demand and which ones. I don't like it but it is what it is. You can't expect high prices when there is an abundancy of that product with little or low demand. What we need is more demand for said product via other crafting recipes (looking at you vanity gear) This will bring rates up or at the very least help sustain the current rates. You are right eventually they will become worthless because ilvl 70 crafted gear can only be useful for so long and as more time goes and easier to obtain loot becomes more readily available there will be less and less demand for it.

Since 2.1 Philo items have crashed to severely low prices. Players can't seem to stop undercutting causing items that once sold from 25-15k to 5-3.5k.
Philo items have crashed because they are easier to obtain. Undercutting happens because items aren't selling. If people don't buy, you will see undercutting until it reaches a price people are willing to buy at.

Short of removing housing or making it really cheap, there is no quick fix for tihs. Everyone is being very stingy because of housing. This isn't a defect in the markets or economy, its a defect in the pricing scheme for housing.

Worst part is that SE doesn't even think the economy is a problem, even though much of its customer base does.

Housing pricing turned everyone into hoarders, nobody wants to buy anything. Furniture market is a joke, materia is just given away, and tons of stuff is sold by npcs. Affordable personal housing would create a furniture market. They need to stop giving materia away and make that market relevent again. I think it would be good if they added an item that could be bought with a large # of philo tomes (1500?) That would create a materia slot to any darklight item. You would see much less philo crafting items on the MB, and demand for materia would go way up and actually be useful.

Currently there are no plans to add any new low/mid level crafting recipes.
We designed FFXIV so that gear obtained from dungeons is more effective than crafted items.

For their first class, players can gain equipment from the main quests so we don't think they should face any problems. But we believe there are other chances to use low-level gear, such as creating materia or equipping them when leveling a second class.

At 1st I was skeptical, but people have mentioned that being able to craft vanity gear may save the economy.

It may be possible, who knows
