... While those people used to check up on updates 3 months ago, they have largely stopped. What was once fine as a casual break while keeping tabs on the game has grown into forgetting all about it for many ex-players who are now truly EX players.

This. Falcon you raise an excellent point. What was once a well intentioned simple break from the game while it gets its act together, is now for at least a few people, turning into something that has dropped out of short term memory for other pursuits (other games or RL).

It only takes so long before anxious daily checking in turns into weekly perusals turns into "Hey what's happening with that FFXIV game you were playing?" "Dunno, I've been doing other things, probably nothing." "Hey did you hear about that new game X that's coming out?" "Ya, it looks good, just waiting on that now, should be fun."

Exactly, i haven't logged on in 2 months i got on today to check it out, same shit, nothing changed, i log off, and play another game. People generally arn't intrested in waiting for a flop game that may never get back on its feet when they can go play a successful game that is actually fun and rewarding to play.
