Just as it says, it seems like every time I use it, it misses.

it is a donut shaped WS, close to you it cant hit, but it goes far, aoe type. run back a few steps before you use it
I value it usefulness as less than it's FFXI counterpart. It never reaches my action bar, and never will (unless it gets changed).
Abyss: Welcome to a Higher Quality of Nerding™
Yeah, the first couple times I used it, I kept wondering why I was missing the mob I was swinging at, and grabbing aggro from mobs a long way off.
Turns out it's a donut-shaped attack. That's the most delicious shaped attack (mmmm, donut), but I haven't found a practical use for it. I can't imagine why I'd want to hit everything that isn't near me, since all my other attacks are based on being near the mob, and running away from the mob just turns off Steadfast.
So I don't equip it. Ever.
I find it most useful during certain Levequests where you have to fight large numbers of monsters, like the one at Bloodshore with the beatles and roselings. Anytime you get surrounded, it works really well. The range on it is actually pretty huge. But to use it against something you have targeted, you need to back up about 5 feet.
Also of note, Arrow Helix is the exact same way. Also, another great time is when you're in a fairly isolated area where it won't accidentally hit things, and your target runs for another party member, you can use it then as well. It's all about knowing the properties of an attack, and thinking about uses for it, THEN working it in practice. I thought Iron Tempest sucked until I found ways to make it work. After that, it serves me well. A lot of times I'll duo during a leve since things come in pairs. If my partner isn't standing some place near for another AoE, but needs some help, I'll also use Iron Tempest then as well.
But, I will say... It could use the hole filled in as it does subtract from its overall usefulness.
Cool move on a taru!

I love iron tempest animation. Coolest in game IMO! Its usefulness is nearly 0 tho.
Basically you can use it for farming only...Iron tempest > brandish/storm's patch and all mobs are dead because the ones outside brandish range will be hit by iron tempest and run to you, entering brandish range. You can clean those quest mob rooms easily this way. ^^
Does switching to Geiko save you 15% on car insurance?
Does Iron Tempest Ever Hit!? - it's a yes... donut shaped like everyone else says
Iron Tempest will only hit targets that are outside a minimum distance from you. Lets say the number was 3 feet minimum distance, all mobs closer than 3 feet from you will not be hit by iron tempest, however all mobs outside of 3 feet from you will be hit (with a max range attached of course).
Iron Tempest actually has a use.
You can tank Dodore from a distance using throwing axes/taunt/provoke/warmonger and hit him and all his minions with Iron Tempest from range. This allows you to avoid some of their troublesome close range attacks and abilities.
