As parsers do not control anything this would lead any rational human being to conclude that parsing falls within this response.

Like the person above me stated, that is about -wait let me bold this for you- tunneling software, i.e. VPNs. It's very courageous of you, and others, to try to broadstroke it to cover parsers, but as pointed out in several other posts, rather accutely, it doesn't work like that.

edit: You can literally do the same thing as a parser with your eyes, a pencil & pad, and free time; I mean that is assuming your brain functions properly and can handle simple addition or work out basic equations.

Clever people just write a program that does it for them.

Enterprising people write a program that does it for them; and then they share it with the community as a helpful tool.

Stupid people use it to berate other player's poor performance, and get reported to GMs for flaunting it as a superiority.

Ignorant people squabble about it on the forums.

(continued) I think it may be up for debate whether tunneling software "touches" the game more than a parser, because it does redirect all the game packets onto a path that they would not normally take if not for the software. If the argument is then that it does not edit the game, a log parser does not either. It opens up your log, looks at the information, and analyzes it without changing what was previously recorded. Hypothetically, you could cut-paste your entire in-game battle chat tab onto a notepad file, print it up, and tally up the damage by hand without utilizing a computer at all. The parser is doing just that, only much, much faster.

(Caveat: I do not use FFXIV-App, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)

I really don't understand why people are acting like parsers somehow benefit the community in some way. I've been playing MMO's all the way back to U:O, and parsers weren't really something back then. No one cared, people just did the stuff they wanted to do, worked together to do it, if someone was a weak link then they formed a new party of people they selected, maybe replaced a person or two with different folks, and got it done that way. Parsers simply do one of three things, they allow people to fine tune their own DPS, which I'm ok with. They give people room to stroke themselves about how awesome they are and brag about it all over their FC and LS, which, whatever I guess, but it is annoying and stupid. And lastly, it gives them ammunition to act like MMO gods, and everyone else that does a DPS lower than them is inferior, needs to be shot on site, and can't play a game to save their life.

Honestly, I've seen more of the last option, a little of the second one, and talked to one person that did option one. That phrase that a few bad apples ruins the whole thing? Yeah, kind of applies here. If people wanted parser to be allowed, and actually cared about the app, and were using it to benefit themselves only, then they wouldn't do options 2 or 3. But that isn't the case here. For instance, would SE be taking notice and warning people if people weren't using parser to act like jerks? No, probably not....I doubt they'd really care, and we would probably never hear about it again. Instead, people are using it as a weapon against other people, and the community is shocked SE is responding with warnings? Really?

As to the people saying "But we would never complete a DPS race unless we kicked X"....like I said before, disband the party, invite the people back you thought did good, and find a suitable replacement that way then. Putting someone down, calling them names, and acting like they generally do, isn't acceptable behavior, and shouldn't be tolerated honestly.

If people enjoy this type of behavior and want to play a game and feel like ultimate awesome, then there are plenty of RPG's that don't rely on other people and you can still do things at your pace, do all of the hard content, and brag about how epic you are online. Relying on other people to help you do something, punching them in the face when they don't perform the way you want them to (I've even seen this happen to people that join parties to try and help others, out of kindness), and then posting online how awesome you are and how many bads you've run into is asinine. It makes zero sense to me why people even bother playing an MMO if they can't treat other people like human beings, and actually try to have fun and work together with them to beat something. You'd be better off playing a game like Dragon Age, where you have control over the whole party, can pause the battle, issue orders, and things like that. And at the end of the day, if you win or lose, you only have yourself to congratulate/blame.
