Shatotto and Shantotto

Do you guys thing they are one and the same? If you haven't done the black mage questline, she was the original creator of the Stardust Rod relic, as well as one of the greatest black mages (iirc she may have invented it), in the 5th Astral era. Your soul stone is the "Gem of Shatotto".

Shantotto (from FFXI) herself messed with multidimensional magic in the "A Shantotto Ascension" story, so maybe she ended up in Eorzea?

My guess? Shatotto is a mistranslation of Shantotto from history being passed down in an unreliable method.

It's entirely possible, but then, I think if SE wanted it to really be the Shantotto, then they would have written it as such. As it stands, it's just more a tip-of-the-hat to the axe-crazy Windurstian BLM rather than an actual appearance. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't 'Shatotto' stated as being a male? (I haven't done the BLM questline yet though so I'm probably wrong on that - I just remember reading somewhere that Shatotto was meant to have been a male character in FFXIV's lore).

and no, shatotto likely isn't shantotto, she has lore and background revealed in the stardust rod quest

she was a powerful black mage who was apparently prone to fits of boredom, in one particularly bad one, she invented the spell Meteor for shits and giggles and cast it, the shards of the meteor it summoned scattered all over eorzea and merged with whatever they touched, which was how dark matter was introduced to eorzea. she then decided to make a series of staves out of the remains of the meteor and created the Stardust Rods.

it's POSSIBLE that she's Shantotto messing with a spell that causes her to cross into other realities, but unlikely (then again, I wouldn't put it past her, I mean, she can certainly cross into other realities (and there's precedent for it in eorzea in the cases of gilgamesh and lightning, and shantotto herself in a few weeks time )it actually makes me wonder if eorzea is at a bit of an interesting spot in the multiverse with all of these other realities managing to break through all the time)))

Nope, definitely female!

From the original Stardust Rod lore:

"All in the Order of Nald’thal know well the legend of Shatotto, a mighty thaumaturge from the fifth of Astral Eras. Her creation of destructive and catastrophic spells evoked as much fear as it did respect, prompting ignorant souls to call her unsavory names—Death’s Handmaiden, the Black Witch, and the She-Devil among them. She was also possessed of an otherworldly talent for crafting thaumaturgical staves. Among her creations, the Stardust Rods are by far the most powerful and coveted, believed as they are to be fashioned from the celestial remnants of a star Shatotto herself brought down to Hydaelyn and clove asunder."

Though that does seem to describe Shantotto as well. Both were powerful black mages that meddled with powerful spells. I guess the difference is one did it for shits and giggles while the other did it to further knowledge at any cost.

Okay! Thanks for that clarification, I wasn't sure if my memory was right or not (in hindsight, I think I was getting mixed up with FFI's Matoya reference in FF Tactics was stated as being a male in FFT yet was clearly a woman in FF1.)

Personally? Lillisette or Aphmau. At the end of the story, I felt I was more connected and involved with than rather than with Lion or Prishe. I was actually helping Lilli and Aph, rather than just watching Lion and Prishe. *shrug*
