Precisely. My days of being super duper positive about this game are now over. It has taking way too long for major changes. I am hoping to be able to bite my tongue by the end of June but by golly it's the 30th next week.... So yeah...It's been 9 months and the game is still nowhere near pulling itself out of the hole it's in. It has maybe one saving grace if they nail it for the PS3 release and sell it for 50%-70% the regular price of a PS3 game to entice people.
But if they screw the pooch with the PS3 release, then this game will never see over 50k users, will never be pay to play, and will likely see dramatically less developer activity.

Um...so which is it? Is it going to be free... really? Or is it only going to be free until more people are playing it? You say you really think it's going to stay free... then you say it should stay free, and then say well until more people are playing it... so the whole post kind of negates itself since you start out saying it should be free and end with well unless more people start playing.
I doubt very highly they will leave this game F2P seeing that they have put too much time and money into this game to allow that. They also said the game would be F2P only until the basic were fixed and it had more content so they could finish up the PS3 version, and at this time the game will become P2P. I also have to agree with others, if this game stays F2P I'll probably leave because doing so does not give SE the money needed to continue to improve this game.
I'm just a bun boy, doing bun boy things.
I hope your willing to wait a while longer, giving the vaugness of the Dev letter XI the update could be anywhere from the 30th to the middle of july.

Sooooo.... because AoC went F2P, XIV should as well? Not gonna happen.

Probability is a funny thing...no matter how badly the odds are stacked against you, people do win the lottery from time to time. Not that I'm feeling all that optimistic either, but I will reserve judgement until 1.18.

Actually for me, if it maintained its level of not so much awesome, I'd still play it if it were free. It's a decent game only in that it's free. There's no way I'd pay for it.
If something drastically awesome happens then I might be able to see myself paying for it, but the odd thing is I don't think I'd want it to be scrapped entirely. I'm all for an F2P option but considering SE's investment I highly doubt that'll happen.

Oh yes they will. When the ps3 version lands with the expansion pack already on it.
Think about it. PC user £20 expansion pack (Already have game and rig)
or
PS3 user (cheaper rig & £45 game AND expansion pack!)
Watch this space next spring, I predict an RoZ-esque release. Albeit with the Garlean Empire attacking Gridania (Changing the map in the resultant destruction), a new storyline, new content regarding the invading forces (hamlet defence anyone?) and new jobs and classes.
Speaking to a few people in the LS and server it would seem none would be surprised fi this actually happened.
As for the time being we are playing essentially in a world at peace. Nothing is really happening. Event he main questline is just a prologue....
It's a pretty Maple Story atm and tbh I'm happy with it F2P...... for the time being. Maybe 'cause I have a firm belief that changes liek I mentioned are being worked in the background (we ain't gonna get to hear about them any time soon, in fact probably not until late winter when I expect a PS3 release date nailed down).
Expect a months free play for all those who dont buy expansion and 2 months for those that do. After that BAM! it's pay day for SE.
Again re-release Spring 2012 - watch this space...... Hahahaha!

You forget that WoW had a failure of a launch too. I mean, servers were down constantly, there was always a line to get in, game was imbalanced, etc. It recovered. AoC failed on its own merits.
Taking a full MMO and making it F2P is basically giving up on it. The F2P model works for little things that nobody cared about to begin with like FlyFF, but you can't expect to cover your expenses on something the size of FFXIV just by selling mounts.
FFXIV will go subscription as soon as S-E is certain that people will pay the subscription fee. The only reason it's F2P now is because nobody in their right mind would pay to play it.
Oh please, WOW's launch was far from failure. It had server stability issues for two months tops, and that's about it. Everything else went by very smooth and it had enough content and non-s***ty features to keep people around. FFXIV had and still has nothing.

if all else fails its gonna turn in to ffxi's rebirth
