This is what I miss the most from FFXI. Hunting NM's. Those drops you coveted. The feeling you got when you saw Leaping Lizzy up on widescan hit your flee macro and managed to engage her. The joy of getting the drop, the disappointment of not getting it and the determination to keep trying. FFXI was all about replacing generic gear with rare gear, those level 7 leaping boots were worn on each character I could equip them on until a better replacement was available. I was proud of them.

We'll never see a system like this again because the casuals would complain it's not fair they weren't handed everything on a sliver platter like we have been since 2.0 came online. This game is too easy, too casual and it's losing it's appeal for a lot of people.

From a business standpoint, SE has to cater to as many players as possible in order to compete on today's market. The gaming market has evolved and the idea of waiting days/months for a small percentage drop from a monster that 100's of other players are vying for, is sadly no longer accepted by most players as fun anymore.

It wasn't fun then either. Especially when you lose out to bots, that were rampant, and could camp 24 hours a day. Imagine now, if there were things like that here, with how much bots have advanced. See on screen, bot teleports in, kills mobs with it's other bots in party, GG. Spawn camping was never fun, i don't care how much people romanticize it, it just wasn't.

I do like the idea of the chance for NMs or similar to spawn during combat leves at random, and a log entry for them. Or even a log entry for NMs that spawn with fates, might encourage more people to do them.

Don't they already sort of have a mechanic like that in Leves? Its like a "wanted criminal monster" or something like that? They could certainly play more with that. That would be really cool if they made those "wanted" monsters more like NMs with a chance to drop something nifty. And you're right, I think it would encourage more people to do them. Maybe do this for behests as well.
