Wow.. you assume I am? No, I am speaking out because over the years I have time and time again seen headlines of someone killing themselves because of a MMORPG community. They kill themselves because they were kicked out of a guild, or someone hacked their account. I have seen people ruin their marriages, their careers, drop out of school all because of the almighty allure of being the most L33T or OP person in their game of choice. I know kids play this game that can barely type a sentence. I know older people play it. My point is that YOU DONT KNOW WHO YOU ARE GROUPED WITH.

I am a older player. Real life always has and always will be more important to me than a game. I have a family, child, husband and I believe in treating people like PEOPLE. That doesn't mean you have to walk on pins and needles. Just talk to them the way you would to a person you know in real life. As for the lame "get therapy" comments that are often made when someone protests.. it sounds like the people who need the therapy are the ones who think its OK to treat others like trash. Its called bullying. Its not right here or elsewhere. If you think it is... time to unplug.
People commit suicide every day over broken relationships, sporting events, musical lyrics and scenes from TV shows and movies, I hope you don't support any of those industries! The truth is the snowball has been rolling long before the moment you hear about it in the news, and the sensationalist media picks up on whatever buzzwords they want in order to fit their agenda. Personal problems are personal. It is not anybody's problem that you cannot handle text but your own. Your argument is fallacious. If you need an adult to supervise you while you play, then ask a parent or guardian. If you want to participate in an online community with real people then you need to make sure that you're a mature adult and can handle it yourself.

edit: Again, for those who did not bother to read the entire thread: I am not saying you shouldn't be nice. Of course you should, and its important to surround yourself with people who aren't jerks. However, the nature of the world and the internet dictates that you will run into people you do not agree with and cannot get along with. You still need to learn to deal with it. The tools are in game, whether its server transfers, blacklisting, reporting, or shutting chat off completely. If you cannot separate words said on the internet in a video game setting from personal problems, then maybe you should seek professional help. Coming onto the boards and spouting altruism and utopian ideals is nice, but it does nothing to change the reality of things. Ignore people you dislike and learn to enjoy yourself instead of complaining about people who complain about you. Do not expect people to treat you differently, nor should you expect immediate respect, patience, or praise. Its called trash talking for a reason; its mostly garbage that people are spewing when they're insulting you. Don't go into a comedy club and take everything the comic says seriously. Don't go into a game played by a myriad of people from different culture backgrounds and age groups and take them seriously either. You are not a special snowflake.

If you want to continue to exist in the real world at all, you need to learn to not take every damn sentence you hear personally, especially by faceless strangers who have no way of influencing you unless you let them.
