I can't access my character in the game

This might be a long shot, but that might be a config issue - check your 'FFXIV.cfg' file (found, by default, in your My Documents/My Games/FINAL FANTASY XIV A REALM REBORN folder). This file holds all your configuration settings for the game, and hence if something goes wrong it's often caused by something set incorrectly in this file.

To fix it, open this file with Notepad and scroll to near the bottom of the page where it says '<Cutscene Settings>'. The last line on this section should say 'CutsceneMovieOpening' and have either a zero or a one beside it. For me it's set for 1, meaning that it's already played through once and hence will not play automatically again unless selected specifically from the main title screen. I presume then it probably says zero for you, so in which case, if you don't want to have to sit through the opening each time you log in, change the 0 to a 1 carefully (make sure it's in the exact space), and then save the file. Hopefully it should now just go straight to character selection after pressing Start on the main title screen.
