I don't understand what that has to do with damage mitigation

The thing is the faster you burn down a mob or boss the faster you push a boss into his next phase the less dmg you as the tank are tanking and the party as a whole. That's why the wpn dmg is important and the stat boosts (vit and str) are increased at a bigger rate on wpns vs other gear or accessories

I would generally agree with this, but as certain fights in Pharos Sirius show, speeding through a boss can dramatically increase the damage taken by your party. In the vast majority of boss fights you're correct, don't get me wrong, but there are exceptions.
