I generally undercut each time by 2%. But I think what helps me and allows me to fight the undercutter and not be afraid to undercut is that I calculate the cost that I need to sell at minimum to collect cost + 30%. Again fees on the seller will just get passed to the customer. Sales tax in real life was a fee designed for the shopkeep not the customer. However, the law does not stop the business from passing the tax to the customer and so they do. You also have to consider what the customer is willing to buy. Don't ignore the overall transaction history. If I see an item for 100k and look up the history to see that it regularly sells at 40k a pop 10 times a day but hasn't sold but 1 in the last 6 days at 100k. I popping mine up for 50k and taking the sale. Sorry but this is business. When a player decides to buy instead of farm they are considering the cost of their time. If your price outweighs that then they will farm and your business will die. I easily make about 350k a day investing only 75k. Undercutting is just that evil you can't get around in any game. Either learn to manipulate the evil for yourself or monopolize and restructure the market on your server. SE will not be able to fix this. It's gotten way out of their control.

I get the whole thing with undercutting. Everyone wants to sell their items first. But some are just ridiculous and it shows that they don't know anything about the market value of the items. For Example I'm making HQ 2 star Gryphonskin items for about 40-50k a piece. Someone waltz's in and put up 5 of the same item for 29k. The current value for Animal fat wasnt even below 2k at that point so putting it up for that price was just stupid. He either wasn't making any profit at all or making very little because his items slow very slowly. 2- stars are very slow sellers to begin with. And he still got undercut anyway. So in the end, some people understand the markets and some are just plain stupid. Gotta roll with the punches and keep changing what ur farming to stay away from the stupids.

This is not "not knowing the value", this is attempting to push the competition out of the market.
    Albeit not very effective.

Aside from that, as you yourself are also saying; The two star market is a slow one as it is so putting up five at a time even at that low price is just idiotic.

    I stand corrected.

You mean people don't buy things and resell them for the average going price??

The only times where I undercut is those times when the marketplace sells normal-quality stuff for more than they cost at a vendor. Often low-level jewellery. Rings that cost 120-150 at a vendor are being put up on the marketplace for 800+, for example. Dyes that are purchasable for 40 gil are sold for hundreds apiece. So those times I refuse to follow the market trend.

OP this is how the economy works in Eorzea. It is totally broken. There is very little value in anything crafted, and the few things that are of value are over produced because it is so easy to get all crafting classes to 50. In many cases it is better to spend 20 minutes running WP than waiting for your Ring, Armor, Mats, or whatever to sell. Do yourself a favor and gather some maps and do a map party you can make 20k gil in a few min with your FC or friends. Don't get frustrated with the MB, just post your stuff and walk away. It will eventually sell. If you micro manage it like everyone else here you are probably not having any fun and just watching the MB.

If I see it is one person, or two retainers that keep undercutting me by 1 gil when I list something, I just keep relisting it, let them undercut me to make sure they are watching the markets, then I will cut anywhere from 1k-20k gil in one jump, let them undercut me, watch for theirs sell, or even buy theirs, then relist everything at the original price. Or if it is a name I recognize as someone that constantly undercuts by 1 gil, I will undercut by thousands just to piss them off, it's not like money is worth anything in this game, but making those type people mad helps me sleep at night.

The whole point of lowering the price by 1 gil is to avoid actual price being too low. Say there's an item that sells for 15k. If people undercut it to 10k then the actual price will change to 10k coz soon there'll be more people who will sell the same item and the price will just go lower and lower. And it's just gonna make it impossible to return the price to 15k because people will think "Oh this one usually sell for 9k, not gonna buy it for 15k".

Alot of people undercut too much is just because they have less gameplay time and need money, so when they can't sell something, they get desperate and undercut so that they sell them faster. Good for you if it works, but unfortunately, not most of the time..

Guys, we all buy in the same market; people will always buy the cheapest. Be smart, learn to lower your price just alil less. To earn money, is to always stay on TOP of the list.
