    Materia in the wolrd of Eorzea!

    Hey peeps, I don’t know if this has been covered on forums yet but this is just a small idea so please feel free to pick it apart and add any suggestions you feel are appropriate. Also keep in mind that my only aim is to improve the game in ways that we can all enjoy.

    So I’ve been looking at the current materia system - it only goes to highlight that we have a great customisation tool already in game but it is lacking any real purpose. The idea that I have worked on is closely linked to the materia use in FF7, so with that in mind let’s discuss how it would work.

    Obtaining Materia
    – I would like to keep this the same / possibly add a special boss materia.

    Equiping Materia – Take the materia melding away from DOH/L and put it with the current materia skills – so you don’t need a high level crafter to add or remove the materia, but you will need them for upgrading.

    Leveling Materia – Once the materia is equipped it will gain experience similar to spirit bonding.

    At the later stages of materia levelling the stones will thirst for power only the Primals / End Dungeon Bosses can provide.

    Upgrading Materia
    – When the materia levels to 100% at Grade I/ II/ III/ IV /V / VI – you will need to remove it from the slot and refine it –

    Grade I refine: Grade I Catalyst + Crafted Materia Essence = Grade II Materia

    The Materia Essence will be crafted by the DOH classes in this example I have suggested the blacksmith class – this should get people crafting again as materia is accessible by everyone (since it’s not bound to melding from DOH/L) people will buy and play again!

    Ilvl Spirit bound gear – Using a piece of older gear - to upgrade materia - to slot into a new piece of gear just makes sense (I hope anyways)

    Ultima Fragment – A rare piece of loot that will drop from EX Primals / Ultima (can change bosses etc) This piece of rare fragment will be needed to upgrade the Materia in the latter stages.

    Selling Materia
    – Yes, you can sell the materia! We make the materia non bound so you can sell it after each Grade up to VI –The upgrade to Grade VII is that one you need to bond yourself and gamble with the success /fail. Again this would hopefully pump new life into the markets.

    Conclusion – I feel that this system or one similar to it would work very well. The main concept is to make materia accessible for everyone whilst shifting the emphasis on using DOH/L to upgrade the materia, instead of applying it to gear. I may well have missed some obvious flaws and not mentioned other parts that I had thought of.

    Notes -
    = Normal spirit bond is normal spirit bond for an item of that level.

    = Extended spirit bond would be equal to rare equipment of that level x 3 spirit bond( so for example to get sprit bond on a lvl 50 rare bracelet you needed to kill 2000 mobs this would make extended spirit bond 6000 mobs)

    = Boss spirit bonds are achieved by killing then end boss of a dungeon whilst wearing the material.

    = Ultima fragment – will only drop from EX Primals and Ultima (pretty low drop rate – make it rare)

    = Success rate could be harsher – but it’s a move in the right direction I would like to see consequences and rewards for trying to improve your gear. The chance to lose it all would fill me with enough fear and excitement to cry when it fails and scream and dance when it works.

    = Change a lot of gear in game to accomodate for the use of materia.

    I like your idea but I think Yoshi has no intentions of making materia involved in the best gear anytime soon. Materia/dying/crafting have no purpose in endgame to him.
