Should this game be tailored for Final Fantasy fans or MMO fans?

Most of us played Final Fantasy XI and other SE titles, and I think that experience informs a lot of our suggestions. I think SE needs to stop looking at FFXI, however, and decide what would be the most fun - first and foremost - before just resorting to what's tried and true.

It should stay on track as far as the FF series goes, otherwise it wouldn't be a FF MMO.

I think both. Why can't fans of other MMOs try out XIV, like it, and possibly become Final Fantasy fans?

    MMO fans.

SE hasn't had more than 500k subs in years. That number is shrinking rapidly (2 server merges in 1 year).

They should keep certain aspects to make it a FF MMO (flexibility to change jobs, great world, story, and art direction, chocobos, airships, world in danger, etc.).

They should learn from what they've done and what everyone else has done, and produce a game that will appeal to a wide audience.

Especially since most of the better FF games are older, and almost no one holds FF13 in the same regard as FF6, FF7, etc.

The game is a final fantasy game if it goes away from that and just does mainstream mmo.. they should take the final fantasy off it.

With that the game should be made for FF fans first with the general mmo playerbase as the 2nd target. Not saying they shouldn't try to get both at the same time though.

FFXI had 500k subs, but Final Fantasy fans are in the 7million range. Even FF 13 sold 6million copys. They succeed with that playerbase they will win.

Not all MMO players are mainstream. But FFXI players are definitely a minority. There is a chance to capture a wider audience while still maintaining a FF atmosphere, but also adding in features which are lacking in all mainstream MMOs, including FFXI.

In my opinion, they should develop this game with goals in mind other than appealing to FFXI fans (which the majority of players on these forums obviously are) because, in the end, FFXI lacked a lot of interesting features which games nowadays are increasingly putting out.

    -House-building
    -Dynamic quests
-large scale battles (apparently this one is coming)
    -naval warfare
    -player-driven political systems
    -voiced cutscenes
    - etc etc

Many of the above are features which Final Fantasy XI is a stranger to. Keeping FF blinders on will not help make this an amazing game, but taking them off can still keep it a Final Fantasy game, and also an amazing MMO.

Most final fantasy fans would never put up with grind that is FFXI and FFXIV without a story-driven story or some other driving force behind them.
