    Maybe I was out of the loop, but even WoW had competition... in PVP (Arena, BGs) and PVE (world firsts, and world boss kills when they were around, and the general quest to have the coolest and rarest gear from everyone else). Also, please... FFXI was the anti-thesis of "working against each other". You were forced to "work together", or you would not pass level 10 and be stuck in Ronfaure/Gustaberg/Sarutabaruta.
