    Making Gil

    Hi!

So, I'm barely two weeks into the game, and I still haven't quite figured out the main way(s) to earn some serious Gil.

Is it safe to assume that...in order to become potentially rich, you must master gathering/profession class(es)?

    Thanks in advance!

Best way to make money is to craft or run dungeons... As per getting rich that pretty much isn't going to happen with mainly people on level 50 and dungeons giving drops better than can be crafted... You can still make a decent dollar by crafting and melding for people but rich not gonna happen over night...

In a game where one character can level up everything there is the lack of demand that you see in other games for their services and hence much, much lower amounts can be gained. Why look over the market for items when you can make them yourselves?

Being able to be everything is great but it also contributes to a stagnant economy (that and the fact that drops from dungeons are better than crafted gear).

A good kick start to making money is picking the allagan gold option from quests, it's nice at the start but once you finish quests you won't have that option anymore.
Hopefully, it will help you out a bit as you level.
As always, use your best judgment when picking rewards.

Another option is consumables. Pay attention to what sells and how often it sells via AH and go for that, just don't overcrowd the market.
Like others have said, dungeons will drop a nice amount of gil so that also helps.

Do Duty Roulette and treasure hunts once unlocked every day. Do every guildhest at least once. Do every sidequest you can, and do the beastmen daily sidequests each day. Do your guildleves every day as well. All of these are ways to make money without messing with the market, and should be sufficient to cover your costs for things like teleportation and repairs.

Crafting may not make as much income as some people would like it to, but it's a good way to save money.

Anapingofness mentioned taking the allagan coins as quest rewards, but that only becomes worthwhile if you have some other cheap way of acquiring gear. Taking a 500 gil coin rather than a helmet doesn't help if you spend 1000 gil to buy that same helmet. The standard NPC price of gear is nearly always higher than the amount you'd get by taking the allagan coin alternative as a quest reward. Market board prices are usually higher as well, although it's worth checking periodically to see whether there happens to be a particularly cheap deal on anything you need (or will soon need).

The way to be sure of getting cheap gear is to make it yourself from materials you gather yourself. That way you (1) don't have many expenses; (2) can freely take the allagan coins from quests so make some money there; and (3) can make some money by selling extra pieces you make. The combination is more powerful than just the #3 that most people look at when considering what crafting earns them.

On my server, market board prices are between 10-40% the value of the Allagan coin reward. (high quality stuff is considerably more, but, why bother with high quality when you're only going to be using the gear for 3-4 levels anyways?)

    Example:

I finish a quest. I can either get a piece of scale mail armor, or 3000 gil (6 silver allagan coins).

If I hop on the market board, a piece of scale mail armor is going for 300-600 gil.

I've yet to encounter a quest reward item (outside of untradeable ones of course) that is going for more on the market than the coin reward.

And besides, why take the quest reward when in 3-4 more quests you're going to gain access to a new dungeon that is going to have gear that is better than the quest reward stuff anyways?

EDIT: I took the "item" option up until about level 15 (prior to gaining access to dungeons)... after that, I've accepted nothing but Allagan pieces and have had no problems with any of the content. Just make sure you're running your daily roulette every day and rolling for gear that your class can use. The few times I've had to buy gear because stuff wasn't dropping after multiple dungeon runs, I've been able to get it for under 1000 gil (lvl 35-42 stuff)

Crafting will save you some expenses, but gathering is the one that will make you some money (although you have to enjoy it and can't just do it for the money).

Treasure hunting (comes from gathering classes 40+) is a great way to make some quick gil, just like the beastmen dailies (42+) and the Roulette.

Biggest way to increase your wealth? Stop teleporting everywhere. It's not free and ads up to a LOT of wasted gil. Learn to use your mount(s) and the ferries/airships to cut down on teleporting fees.

Gathering and selling the items from rare treasure maps are probably the fastest ways to make money. If you don't have a high level gatherer, consider spiritbinding and selling Rank 3+ materia. Rank 4+ sells for the most, but you can do passably well with Rank3 as some players will buy them for their relic weapons and as stand-ins until they get enough for higher level materia. Just search the marketplace to find what sells for the most. You can also sell food, or materials for food, as those are being steadily consumed. Unfortunately, food has a fairly low profit margin for your time.

Also, many FCs and players are clinching their belts trying to save up for FC housing. Because of that, you can say FFXIV is in the middle of a recession. Don't be disappointed in a slow turnover
