The grind from 1-50 is fun. Grinding gear is not. So why not add something similar to the merit system? A similar system is already in place for pvp so just add something similar for pve.

I certainly hope they add something like this down the road.
Right now I'm holding out for more Jobs and Classes - I honestly think if the periods between content cycles were punctuated by new Jobs/Class introductions people would not be so quick to complete the new end-game content and there would be far less complaining going on in the forums 24/7.
+1 for a Merit System to further improve your character though.
Somewhat related.
Grinding gear to Spirit Bind it to unlock traits. Would still involve grinding for gear, but at least there would be a longterm reason to obtain Darklight or Vanya.
What is a merit system???
Adventure, that's the life for me!
Wow, you consider leveling 1-50 a grind? In my opinion it is way too fast with too little in the way of interesting questing and deep lore. I've never seen such fast leveling, but then I guess Yoshi said he wanted the game really to begin at cap with leveling just a (slightly) extended tutorial.

Yeah, he did say that the 1st 50 lv is just a tutorial.
Here's hoping that once lv cap is increased or on a future expansion that things will be more difficult. It kinda already is with hard modes/extremes
The 'Merit System' was an experience system in FFXI where once you hit the level cap of 75 and maxed out your exp (unlike in ARR, you could continue gaining exp past your level cap up to 1 exp to the 'next level' and it would stay there.); instead of gaining exp, you would gain points in a different experience system called 'limit points' (or 'lp'). After gaining a fixed amount of lp, you would gain one 'merit point' (or 'merit' for short), a point system that is used kind of like the AP boost you get in ARR each time you level up. Merits could be used to customize your character in many different ways, from boosting stats like HP, STR and MND, to unlocking special abilities (called 'Merit Abilities'), or actually tweaking the effectiveness of earlier abilities, such as reducing the ability cooldown or increasing the ability's effect duration.)
Merit functions increased in level the more merits you added, the more it required, to a certain cap (like 10/10 for increase HP level, or 15/15 to unlock the WHM ability Martyr). And there was only a certain amount of merits you could actually spend in total (255 I think was the actual cap of merits you could gain), meaning you had to think about exactly what you wanted to spend your merits on.
It was actually a very complicated system that was added solely as compensation for the fact the original development team kept the level cap fixed on 75 for over five years, and hence meriting was a way of allowing the player to go beyond the cap by customizing their character in their own way. Done right, a merited level 75 character was capable of handling things they wouldn't otherwise be able to fight, assuming they'd put merits into the right aspects of their character - 'increase INT' isn't exactly going to help a PLD out now would it?![]()
