Actually, it kind of does. It's the same issue with PvP. When you jump, the game doesn't track your position in the air. It assumes you are still where you were before you jumped, until you land and the game updates. So, if you jumped from a platform into the poison and then run to the next platform, you'll be hit for fewer ticks of poison, versus running the whole way. You can see this also if you jump from the poison to the platform; you'll actually take poison damage as you are in the air over the platform, because the game still believes you are standing in the poison.
