BCNM,KSNM were some very fun content that was only limited by how many seals you wanted to farm which these said seals dropped off monsters in the wild. Royal jelly was always one of my favorite battles. But yes I do agree lockouts wouldn't be such an issue if there were more tidbits of content to do maybe it's just me but I can't help but feel like if there was open world content besides fates and didn't have lockouts there wouldn't be so many complaints.
Took a few years for FF11 to build up that in between content, people are impatient asshats and want everything NOW, patience is no longer a virtue.

Yeah one thing that I think helped ffxi content wise was it was out in japan for awhile before it was released world wide. When Japan got it there wasn't Drg or Sam I believe and level cap was 50 I think. When the rest of the world got it we had rise of the zilart expansion, more jobs, level cap was 75 with chains of promathia expansion around the corner. I tip my hat to any mmo developer trying to release a game in this day and age now because it seems people are expecting a lot of content when the game first launches.
